Fingerprints

Forensic fingerprinting was first done in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1948 when 3 year old June Anne Devaney was abducted from her Queen's Park Hospital bed and murdered on the hospital grounds.

Fingerprints on a bottle under her bed led police to fingerprint all males over 16 years of age in the area. They took 46,500 sets of fingerprints and a match was made to Peter Griffiths, a 22 year old ex-service member. He confessed and was hanged at Liverpool Prison on Friday Nov. 19th, 1948.

The fingerprints taken were destroyed.
