I've been going for walks early evening with my ipod shuffle. Going to a lake with friends some time soon. I'm gonna try and find someone to go with me to an amusement park that has a water slide & roller coasters. If I can't find anyone I may just go during the week by myself - it's half price and they have funnel cake.

(38,958 posts)just working everyday. Hope to be able to take a vacation in September, however spouse's health has been less than ideal this year. I do hope to get out with the camera a bit and get a few pics, haven't even been up to doing that of late.

(23,272 posts)Our anniversary is coming up in August (28 years) and I'm thinking of trying to lure my husband off the farm to go canoeing on the local river. You can rent them by the hour or the half day or the day... maybe bring a picnic.
The Chicago River has the option of renting kayaks too and taking a river tour that way. Since I've done the Chicago River Architecture tour on the big boat, it might be interesting to do it by kayak and then go out to eat.
So yeah. That will pretty much be my highlight of the summer...

(35,789 posts)Yep, 28 years and I've only heard him say a serious thing once. Twenty-eight years of laughs and jokes and pranks. Twenty-eight years of fine wining and dining. That's pretty much it for us. Have never had a fight. It's only been happy times and sometimes I have to pinch myself and ask what I did to deserve this.

I have mostly been tending to the gardens and landscaping.

(11,833 posts)and the weather is hot. Cool that you're doing gardens & landscaping. For me that just means 'pulling weeds and calling it a day' lol.

Planning more visits to DC in the future.
The day we went it was under 80 degrees and no humidity in July in DC! Miracle!
We had a great time.

(11,833 posts)It's one of the coolest museums in DC! Wow, 80 and no humidity. When I was a kid I ran cross-country. I remember summer days where you could barely breathe it was so hot & humid. Enjoy it while it lasts!

(7,699 posts)I love the Smithsonian, and the Mall. My Mom was born in DCin 1928, and she used to walk or take the bus all over town, by herself, all the time. She played in the US Capitol (her uncle was a gardener there). She'd go up and down the steps, across the lawns. She went up the Washington Monument so many times she couldn't say how many. In the 40s, my family was all over DC, and they would walk really large (for today) distances across town to see each other on Sundays after church services. I love my mother's stories of DC as it was back then.
In 2003, my husband took me on a whirlwind backpacking tour of London, Paris, Nice, Ruan, Interlocken, and Rome. DC is the most beautiful city I have seen. My grandchildren are growing up in Northern Va, and I want them to feel like DC is there 'home' also. I was 6th generation born there (the grandkids were born in Va).
I"m stuck in Pennsyltuckey now, south central Pa

(11,833 posts)Yes, Smithsonian was one of my favorites. Also loved the Phillips Gallery (my mom played a flute concert there once), the FBI building (I enjoyed pretending I was a g-man), and bicycling along the C&O Canal. Great place to grow up. I must say though, I don't miss the traffic.

(35,789 posts)Went to the top of the Empire State Building. Yeah, I know, lived here for decades (upon decades) and have never done it. It was fun. I liked the educational shows about how they made the building more environmentally friendly. These presentations are to keep the visitors entertained while they stand on line to get to the top, but I think they do a good job of environmental awareness.
I see the city every day from my home, but I never saw it from this angle. It changes one's perspective. It truly is an amazing city!
This is what I saw from the Empire State Building:
and this is what I see from my house on a good day, when the smog isn't so bad. This is a little closer than where I am, but it's the best approximation I could find.
Tomorrow I am going on another day trip: NY Botanical Gardens. Again, going with a friend and we are going to see the show called "Groundbreakers: Great American Gardens and the Women Who Designed Them."
I've taken time off over the summer so I could get my house into shape, gardens into shape, and myself into shape. I'm happy to say all three are "almost there." That has been work and only the results are fun.
I also have loved spending every day with my three cats.
But come September, it's back to work. I'm enjoying this time while I have it.
Thanks for asking! It's made me think about the fun aspect of life, something I don't spend a lot of time doing.

(11,833 posts)since the 1960's and neither has been to the Empire State Building. The NY Botanical Gardens - is that in Brooklyn? Sounds like a fabulous show. Congratulations on working on those three great goals. I know, right? Fun is what we should all be most concerned with. Not the least. Have fun!

(24,146 posts)and we'll get up to the mountains a few more times. i hope we can get a camp trip in, too.
lovemydog
(11,833 posts)I love it! Rivers are awesome. I like camping so long as it's with the right people. I made the mistake once of going with 4 couples I didn't know very well. Turns out they were yuppies, complaining about what this new stove cost and how much this mountain bike they want to buy costs and how this new tent they saw in a magazine is better than the old tent they bought a month ago. Yuck. The last day I yelled 'How about everyone shut the fuck up and look at the sunset on the river?!' Never hung out with them again.

it's just the husband and i when we camp, so we don't usually have to worry about other people. well, outside last year when our little spot was invaded by a family with three children and then a couple with the loudest voices ever.

(11,833 posts)Have you seen some neat wildlife? I love seeing birds, fish, etc. Most definitely not a bear in the middle of the night though.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)for some stupid reason, so everyone is pretty well not out. haven't seen any fish in the river, we got a lot of rain and the river was brown with debris from the burn scars further upriver.

I get to go out of town for a few days.
