Coffee, before food laws

In the 1870s what was commonly sold as coffee was found to contain mostly roasted peas and beans flavored with chicory.

THE DARK HISTORY OF FOOD FRAUD,FROM POISONED CANDY TO COUNTERFEIT COFFEE

Saw dust and chalk were common additives to breads back when city dwellers bought from bakeries because there were limitations on their kitchen/stove access.
