The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsDo you like beer, wine and booze for the taste, or because it gets you drunk?
Yes, we all know that alcohol is a social lubricant. But, why do you love getting lubricated so much?
Curious minds want to know.

(10,418 posts)But who doesn't drink for effect?
I like the taste of beer, but I'm not going to down a couple of them after work just because I'm thirsty. There is definitely an element of fun to it. Very few people drink just for the taste of it. Alcohol doesn't taste that good.
I say you've got a problem if you get a DUI, or if your wife is threatening to leave you if you don't stop drinking, or if you wake up in a sheep pasture with your pants down and you don't remember how you got there.

(32,083 posts)Neither does non-alcoholic beer and wine. Yuk!

(4,524 posts)Some beers can taste very good. It's garbage like the popular beers that don't taste good (Miller, Bud, Coors, etc.). If the only option I have is mass produced crap in a can, I'd rather just have a soda.

(54,378 posts)I HATE beer, wine and booze precisely because I don't like the taste, so I never get drunk.
Never missed it either.

(8,217 posts)In fact, I don't really drink.
I tend to be the DD(Designated Driver) not the (Designated Drunk).
I do partake now and then though for various reasons.
1 - In social occasions, it is nice to have, as to keep things going. If someone is having a drink along with me, I have one which I nurse throughout the night.
2 - When my friends decide to watch a movie that I am not willing to watch, but I felt compelled to. I will have enough so that I can sleep through the movie. Case in point, Twilight... Good god, I blame a lady friend and a 40 year old virgin on that one.
There you go.

(8,492 posts)I do like good gin. Do I drink it for the taste or to get a buzz? Both...mostly for the taste. Unfortunately, it tastes really good to me, so I have to watch how much I'm drinking.

(33,688 posts)Brandy or vodka for quick effect. Decent US brandy mixed 50/50 with Starbuck's mocha frappucino or straight, ice cold vodka of good quality - I prefer Smirnoff or Sobieski - lead to fairly rapid and significant consciousness alteration.
Good wine, craft/Euro beer/fine Scotch or other whisky for lengthy savoring. Life is too short to drink crappy wine or spirits.

(12,132 posts)I've had a few that went really great with the food I was eating but those were either happy accidents or a more experienced person helped me with choices.
I LOVE good beer. I can drink shitty beer if it's free and the tap water is sketchy.
I might have a beer or 3 a week and very occasionally more if I'm at a party and the wife is driving.
The warm glow of 2 or 3 spectacular craft beers is perfect for me. (The beers I like often have a much higher ABV than the average 7-11 swill)
I love single malt scotch and enjoy it on occasion with a nice cigar. IF I was rich I'd enjoy them more.
If my wife is in a mood for some White Russians or Tequila sunrises I'll make 'em and drink 'em with her. I do a pretty decent Margarita on the rocks. I keep good Vodka and Tequila on hand for those occasions but a bottle may last us months if not more. A little while back we went with our son to one of his Moose Lodge events and they had some crazy thing with Fireball whisky and pineapple juice that she really liked so I'll be making that for her sometime soon. I'll probably just sip some tequila instead drinking that.
I hate frozen drinks (but that goes back even before I was old enough to drink - never liked Slurpies or slushies or Popsicles.)
I need to pick up some good rye for Manhattans and other things.
Hendricks gin and tonic with a twist of lime is sublime.
I ain't saying the buzz isn't a fun part of it but I wouldn't drink at all if I didn't like the taste.

(21,786 posts)I drink ales and stouts and wine and whiskey for the taste; a moderate buzz is a nice bonus. I don't drink often, and when "drunk" is my goal I usually go with vodka.

(12,132 posts)just had the best chicken fried steak and some good ol' draft Yuenglings at Texas Roadhouse....The only thing better would have been if they had Shiner Bock. Shiner Bock is the beer to have with chicken fried steak.

(4,524 posts)I'm not sure why there's so much hype about it. People seem to love it. I thought it was fairly mediocre.
hifiguy
(33,688 posts)Or Trappist ale to be sure but it is a solid little American beer like Grain Belt is up here in Minnesota. A nice, easy everyday beer with some character.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)IF I was rich I could drink Chimay all day but I'm not so I don't. Plus they have a brewery in Tampa so we get it on tap as the cheap beer in most restaurants around here.
Plus it's not Bud.
Cold can of Yuengling and a cheese steak sandwich. That's a fine lunch right there.

(29,047 posts)I usually only have one drink when I drink, which won't give me a buzz. A burger and a beer can be a nice meal. Though sometimes I drink to get drunk.

(8,170 posts)Wine generally tastes good, some beers and some real (alcoholic) ciders but I'll rarely have more than a glass

(153,160 posts)I like to add a bit more to a Mudslide.....mmmm.....alcoholism is rampant in my family so I have always treated liquor as a treat and would never consider it something to drink daily.............and I only like feeling toasty - I detest the out of control feeling of being wasted.
Liberal_from_va34
(50 posts)I usually drink wine for the taste, which can vary wildly from sweet to dry. On the other hand, I only drink beer to get hammered, since it usually comes in one flavor - piss. Ditto for vodka.
