Choi Min-sik, being a Buddhist, before each take he and the crew would have to offer a prayer of apology to the octopus before devouring it.

it took seven takes and seven octopi to get the shot they wanted.

I had the ending figured out before it happened but, I was not for sure. It is pretty sick and twisted. I bet the original Korean is Really Sick and Twisted.

This is some sick shit.

An octopus may be even more intelligent than a chimp or dolphin.

And it is cute to eat it alive when it fully is aware of what is happening to it.

You equate that with eating a carrot.

Right.

Like it or not, its not going to change there. If you want to call Koreans barbarians have at it. But some things are part of another country's culture whether you like it or not.

Does that make me adverse to another country's culture as well?

I will not accept little children being raped and married at 8 because that is a cultural norm.

I will NOT accept barbaric, wretched things defended as a cultural difference.

Eating a sentient creature alive is barbaric.

Defend culture at your pleasure.

An octopus is generally accepted as being more sentient than dolphins and primates.

Culture is often wrong.

my boss invited a lot of rich clients to lunch and would ask me to tag along. One day in the restaurant they brought out a live lobster and the waiter carved it up at the table, removing its limbs and tail. The head and body still looked alive while people were eating its parts, raw. I didn't partake; I can't eat any seafood or I puke. This almost made me puke without eating.

being eaten raw. I have had it steamed or boiled most of my life, and its the best thing with melted butter, and a touch of garlic. As for eating anything alive, I suppose Raw clams or oysters maybe, but those are usually iced.. or put with ice. I would have a very hard time doing what she did. But, when in Korea, do as Koreans do...I guess.
