The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhen do you think it's too late at night to call someone?
Home phone rang last night about a quarter of 10:00 from a parent for a PTO thing. Not someone we know or are friends with. Seemed a little late to me, but maybe I'm an old grump.
What say DU? What time is too late? And is there a difference between calling a cell and land line?

(102,236 posts)Sleep is too important and one doesn't know if the person on the other end is a 4 AM riser--or a night owl.
I say 9 PM is the cut-off and no, cell v. land line makes no difference--hell, how does the caller even know which they are calling in most instances, unless a close friend? Not to mention how few people I know even have land lines now.

(6,336 posts)I used to have people wait to call me after then because it was a difference of the call counting against my minutes or not (never had a landline of my own). Most of my peers were in similar situations, so any chatty phone calls would take place after 9 or on weekends.
Now it's a moot point because many cell plans have unlimited minutes, but when I only had 200 it made a difference.
I would not take a call from an unknown number after 9.

(60,010 posts)Assuming it is not an emergency, of course.
Down here, any time after 8 pm is pushing it, for friends and neighbors, unless it is urgent,
People go to bed between 9 and 10 here, mostly, and that is well known.
Calling at 9 pm is LATE, for casual calls.

(6,261 posts)I also don't keep my phone in the bedroom and have the ringer off on the landline. Late and early phone calls are usually bad news, and I sleep poorly enough as it is.

Friends or family can call until 9 unless it's important. Good friends will shoot a text to see if they can call.
I actually prefer texts for BS that I can either read or ignore and that do not require my immediate reply.
I no longer have a landline, so odds are I won't even answer unless I recognize your number and want to talk to you at that moment. Leave a message and I might get back.

(5,364 posts)9-ish PM for friends and family. 8 PM for everybody else.
Now I'm a late to bed, late to rise type due to my work schedule, so my body clock has been on "night owl" setting for decades, and there are few people that know my schedule and they know I don't mind at all if certain people in my circle call as late as 10 or even 11 PM.

(32,056 posts)if you're dealing with a landline especially.
I have a cell that I keep on vibrate. If there's something important at night I will get it when I wake up. If I am awaiting someone's phone call I might turn the sound on or check frequently - especially if an immediate family member isn't at home. Other than that they can wait.

(3,275 posts)Unless it was really important or I had prearranged to talk to them later. I have some friends and family members that work nights or unusual hours so sometimes I get phone calls late. Most people know I stay up until 11:00pm or midnight.

(12,778 posts)However, my parents are both retired now, and Mom says they never go to bed before 11:30. I'll occasionally call them after 10 if I happen to think of something I want to tell them.
