What I can't figure out is how he keeps track of it all from a ground level perspective.

Looking at it from above is one thing. Looking at it on the ground is another thing entirely.

He must have amazing spatial skills or something along that line. Very beautiful and that it is ephemeral makes it all the more special.

I think this guys' work was compelling to me because I work with people like that!

My final notes on the project were about the project manager.

The mind of an engineer.
The heart of a poet.
The hands of a craftsmen.
The eye of an artist.

We built something 40' long, 20' wide, about 15' tall, based on a model that
you could hold in your hand(about the size of a pound of butter).

Can't say what it is until it opens to the public sometime in the next few months.
Nothing sinister, very much made for fun.

You could work out the design on paper and then map all the vertices to gps coordinates.

Other than that surveyor tools might work but you usually need two people for that.

Accuracy varies depending on how many satillites you are receiving.
GPS Satillites are not in geosyncronous orbit but instead are circling the earth.
I usually get between 5 and eight. You need three to get a position on the earth.
My handheld GPS can receive 12 maximum but its old maybe 1998/1999.
I bet the new ones are better.

You can get better accuracy with a GPS with WAS radio signals that supplement
the satillites signal but not available everywhere.

Crop circles are made by mysterious forces and absolutely are not the result of people walking through grain fields with ropes and boards, no matter how many times you've seen the technique demonstrated conclusively on tv.

I would think that this is harder to do than crop circles. Snow may be much less a forgiving medium.
