My book should be ready by the end of October, maybe before. The technical aspects of the printing are the sticking points, but the rest of it is ready.
The big news is: I decided to risk getting it reviewed by Kirkus reviews in New York. They're expensive, and they're known for being cranky if your book lands with a reviewer who finds it wanting. To be fair to disappointed authors, they give authors the option of keeping their review secret, not for public eyes. This way, if they try again with another book, potential readers, agents, whatever, don't have a negative track record that might cause rejection in advance.
I knew this was a risk, and though I have great plugs by such known people as Stan Lee, Adrian Cronauer and Howard Dean, none of them are known for boosting sales of quirky novels.
Instead of the lukewarm review I was fearing/expecting from Kirkus, here are some (typical!!) excerpts of their review:
********
Likable, unambitious Everyman Robert Packard (like Hewlett-Packard, but without the money) is happy enough with his life at the beginning of (DFW)s strange, uproarious novel......
He can scarcely believe his luck (Things like this happen to characters made up by Stan Lee, he thinks, not to me), and he quickly decides to up the ante and kill two birds with one stone: Hell not only obtain more valuable bottles of wine from the past, but hell do it by meeting one of his all-time favorite historical personages: U.S. presidentand well-known wine enthusiastThomas Jefferson.............
At first the scheme seems to be working perfectly, but (DFW) soon complicates it in half a dozen ways that all flow naturally from the plots central gimmick, and each new complication is funnier than the lastand all of them add up to a pitch-perfect comic novel.
Enthusiastically recommended.
A hilarious time-travel shaggy dog story.
**************
OK, I was indeed trying to put in some humor, although not to make it the central theme, but I'll take it. "Pitch-perfect? Enthusiatically recommended????" Bring it on, baby. It may not help me sell a single book, but I'll savor that one for a while!!

(54,378 posts)I have to get all the tech stuff clear, and I'm begging my Dallas friends for help on that. They're being wonderful, but they have day jobs, too.
On the other hand, this will require full disclosure of my identity to all, and a probable withdrawal, for the most part, at least, from DU. Still, there are enough of you out there to keep the fires burning. I'm not worried.

You can always PM people who have indicated that they wouldn't miss it! I'd hate to see you have to desert DU...

That's practically a ringing endorsement of my able-to-go-out-in-public skills.
I really do look forward to reading it!

(4,076 posts)You have written a wonderful book. That should be obvious to anyone who reads it - even a critic. Here's to Kirkus Reviews for giving you some of the recognition you deserve.

(54,378 posts)But when my best friend back in Dallas got his first book published by Ballantine in 1996 (or 1997?) and it sold thousands and thousands and got the film rights bought by Warner Brothers for half a million, I wondered ever since if I had it in me to do the same. Our styles and subject matter were totally different, of course. His book was totally sci-fi and deadly serious, with all sorts of speculation on future society, etc etc. My book was strictly for fun, with a few not-so-concealed barbs tossed in at Republicans "just because I could."

Congratulations. It must be so nice seeing that others enjoy it.

(54,378 posts)I have to work on the font, as it's not the same for Kindle as for the print version.
Seeing others enjoy it is the equivalent of thundering applause for a musician. It's worth more than money, which I doubt I'll make on the venture. I'm in if for the fun--and everyone else's.

(41,961 posts)Like you, I'm sure, I vetted them and decided they would be fair and I wasn't buying anything. I've used that review and pull quotes from it in a lot of PR, and it's treated with a lot of respect.
Btw I also did an interview with them for their print copy, and it was interesting talking with the interviewer. I think they've been a good gatekeeper for indie publishers.
Again, really happy for you!

I think I'd be happy if those people who read it have a great time with it. If that's a lot of people, so much the better. My friend in Dallas tried his hand at this almost 20 years ago, and sold tens of thousands of copies and Warner Brothers bought the film rights for $500,000. He told me my book was better than his, but that it was a different world, much tougher for authors these days.
