The original has a TOTALLY different feeling, much more like an ACTUAL dying person might feel...unlike Terry Jacks' version, where the guy sounds like he's stoked to be terminally ill.

i wrote a lot of poetry back in that era--it was easy to fall into that "making a statement in a not so subtle way" trap

but there's no accounting for the majority's taste. cat's in the cradle made it to number 1 on the charts but his song "taxi" only reached number 24.

just as the song "seasons in the sun" by terry jacks hit number 1 and his former band, the poppy family, hit number 2 with "which way you goin' billy?"

morris albert's song, "feelings," hit number 6 and, according to a friend who played piano bars/lounges & private parties, it was the most requested song for awhile. it was as if people who viewed music as background or a pastime couldn't get enough of it while people involved in the creative end of the spectrum and held a passion for music couldn't stand it.

The Carpenters, Captain and Tennille, Donny and Marie, et al. So I agree with most of your list. I really liked a lot of the British Invasion stuff from the '60s, but quickly started losing interest in contemporary music after the Mersey Beat started to fade away. But Cat's in the Cradle was one of the few songs of the '70s that really resonated with me.

the charts today.

Most of those are actually good songs but people like to shit on things they themselves do not like.

and anyone who does not like Harry Chapin can go do something nasty to themselves.

And please, no way is Chicago on such a list. I know there are Eagles haters out there, and not just in Dallas. And you'd better be glad southlandshari doesn't come around here anymore, or she'd have your butt in a sling for putting the Commodores on there! Of the other Alabama act on there, Captain and Tennille (at least she is), "Shop Around" can live.

not every chicago song was great
not every eagles song was great
& three times a lady sucked (imo) ( i liked "sail on"--does that count?)

but life after the commodores was good--
running with the night was pretty good (although the video is stupid)

Or is that a different one "Soft Rock Classics"? Well I guess it makes no nevermind...I've thought of taping one of these classics and maybe going out and scoring some angel dust so I can site and gaze in slack jawed amazement, not comprehending what I am watching... "Precious and Few" by Climax! "Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins? Christopher Cross! Dino Vanelli! Barry Manilow! My brain is melting! I worked at a Pizza Hut out of high school back in the day and the jukebox was full of nothing but these kind of songs!
People wanting to rock out would always play "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Croft...Hey! At least that song had an electric guitar in it!

They hold some fond memories for a lot of people. I bet if you search for any of them on YouTube, you'll find that many of them have been viewed hundreds of thousands or millions of times. The surprising thing is, there are many young people who really enjoy listening to these oldies. If the radio stations back then didn't have these songs to fill their music logs, we would have heard the same songs over and over again a lot sooner than we did.

CCR's 'Up Around the Bend' was great on the road, and Quincy Jones' 'Soul Saga (Song of the Buffalo Soldier)' was great for the way it was engineered for the sound to travel around all 4 speakers. Good times!
