there's a nor'easter blowing in this afternoon

my idjit neighbor across the street decided this morning was a good time to set up a plastic canopy in his parking lot. Luckily (for me) he put it behind his shed. I wonder how long it will be before it gets blown away.

We're just getting breezes right now. It will be roaring tonight and/or tomorrow.

“There was a desert wind blowing that night.

It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch.

On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight.

Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks.

Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.”

It is one of those raw, cold winds that blow in from the Atlantic that frizz your hair and make your skin shiver and fill your sinuses with boogers.

On afternoons like that, every woodstove ends up alight.

Meek little assholes across the street stupidly set up plastic canopies in their parking lots, only to have them sail like plastic ships through the air and into the treetops.

Husky farmer/hunter/fisherwives feel the handle of a carving knife and study their snoring husbands' beer guts sagging over their pantless legs as they lay passed out on the sofa in front of the woodstove.

Anything can happen. Trust me. I know.

Maybe, just maybe I'll venture out on Monday.

I hope none of the canopy blows into your yard.

6. I ventured down to the barn to take care of Dahli

First I stopped off in the garden to start moving dead-headed perennials into piles along the edge of the woods behind, where I plan to compost in place for next year. I could have done it this morning, but ahead of the rain it was too much like work. Now, in the dusky half light, with an ominous breeze and light rain rustling the trees, it was more an adventure.

A gunshot rang through the woods just as I headed down the hill. Jake and Luna froze in place, a pair of statues staring off into the wild. A snort from the direction of the barn let me know that Dahli was already safe inside.

The dogs raced ahead of me into the barn, and then turned and ran back out as Dahli paced nervously back and forth, up and down the aisle, tossing her mane and switching her tail. Her coat was damp, as was her blaze-orange seasonal hunting vest.

I approached to remove the wet vest, but she swung her hindquarters into my face. Touch me and I'll blast you right back outside, her rounded, muscular butt seemed to say....

We've filled the outside feeders. Tomorrow I'll hook up the birdbath heater (nothing like waiting till the last minute, why do we do that). The fountain should come out of the pond soon.

Is Dahli still wearing her vest tonight?

(she lives in the aisle so she has plenty of space to move around in weather like this) she settled down and started sticking her nose in my face and kissing me. At first I figured she was begging for treats, although I hadn't brought any carrots with me. The it dawned on me she wanted me to get the burrs out of her mane and forelock. Once I did that, I was allowed to undress and brush her off. Lil princess owns me...

I didn't think you could kill 25 years of Southern accent, but Connecticut did it.
