my 1st real Christmas in 6 years is looking possible. UPDATED with pic

Last edited Sat Dec 6, 2014, 09:26 PM - Edit history (1)

Nothing but new socks and undies since I adopted Luna back in '08. My filly Dahlia has done great by herself since Algiers died in 2011. But horses are herd animals and this year in particular, she's had to be alone a lot.

After lots of saving, many false starts and many near misses, it's looking like I'll be bringing a rescue mare home in a few weeks. Her elderly people could no longer care for her. They had her for sale at "meat-plus" price with no takers and she was at risk of heading the the auction house and possible slaughter, when a nearby breeder rescued them and her. The breeder is giving her to me at essentially the same they've paid for her and found somebody to bring her home to me at well under the going rate for trailering.

She is a registered morgan, old-fashioned type and absolutely beautiful, but has no training beyond wearing a halter, leading and standing still for farrier and vet, which is most likely why no takers. So I can fill in what she is missing.

Fingers crossed for me that all goes smoothly. I need the weather to hold the week before Christmas. No ice storms; no snow storms. Clear roads, please...

4. here's a pic.

She's the redhead in front. She's got a left rear sock just like riderinthestorm's Ginger! But she's a dark auburn, not bright copper

5. We are in the same boat, but with rescue dogs. And I wouldn't trade it for the world.

, as long as I can keep them safe.

Fingers crossed...

10. She's beautiful!

Best wishes and much happiness to you all.

My knowledge of horses is minimal but I always loved Morgans since I read Justin Morgan Had a Horse about 50 years ago!

11. Good for you

and good for the horse.

I haven't heard anyone mention Morgans in ages. Decades ago I knew several families in my area who raised Morgans, some specifically for show and breeding. They are a beautiful horse and this one is gorgeous. Thanks for taking this one in, I'm sure she will fare well in your care.

But, it's a matter of what gets ahold of you. Definitely can relate... There is a heart and mind here which you are bringing home to their forever home which is filled with love.

Many kind regards,

18. Bless you, MT, for helping this girl. You know what you are facing, and I send joyous

vibes to you and your new mare. May you find an equal amount of trust in each other.

The folks who rescue large animals are in a class of their own and deserve huge props from those of us who can only applaud from a distance. Many thanks, Merry Christmas, and hugs for all you do for the equines(and, in your case, canines, felines and on down the line.)

19. I don't know what your situation is. Are you a hose trainer, boarder or rescuer?

whatever it is, the mare is lucky to be going to a good home. How old is she? Good luck and cheers to you and the horses.

20. I am a mini-farm owner, lifelong rider and amateur horse trainer

who, in my earlier years, rode for 2 years with a successful soon-to-be international trainer and spent a year as a barn manager for another international rider. I have a lonely arabian mare at home that I raised from 18 months & started under saddle by myself.

I was originally going to get another arab, but after much soul-searching, decided it made more sense to get an old-style morgan. Still a good "back yard" type of horse, but less reactive and quick.

She's coming 8 so still has many years ahead of her. Due to life getting in my way, I didn't start my arab mare under saddle until she was 7, although she had ground work off and on starting at 3.
