(60,010 posts)and then sit and listen to a zillion fireworks going off till 3 in the am, the usual.
Same plan for the next day.
dog goes nutz at fireworks, runs around the house barking like mad, then dives under my desk.
Which is not big enough for him, but he manages.

(60,010 posts)What happened was...I got him when we moved into this house, and a few months later, on Christmas Eve, the neighbor across the way put on a huge fireworks show. It was like something I have seen in cities, for god's sakes. Colorful AND noisy.
The pup had been on the back deck with us, the sudden commotion scared him, he ran into the house and under the couch.
And thus a phobia was born.
Well, around here there are fireworks on Christmas, and on New Years, and sporadically during the week between, and there are dove hunters in the fall,
plus occasional gunfights among the drug dealers on the other side of the hill, all those sounds carry, and he goes nutz.
Then there is the usual storm season, lots of thunder down here.
So the vet gives him Valium.
It stops most of the drool ( Goldens drool a lot) and reduces his fear.
But one of us still has to do night watch when the storms and/or the fireworks hit.

(60,010 posts)The are sporadic, and over quickly, maybe once a month. Good news is the police respond pretty quickly.
Of course, the dog hears them even if I do not, and starts barking.
and he hears the thunder when the storm is 40 miles away..I have tracked that..amazing hearing.

(34,051 posts)and neighbors who set them off on new years & 4th of july
one new years i was blasting the tv, the speakers on the computer with music, & had a loud fan running just to try & block out the sound
then one night my dog ate half a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting a little neighbor kid set on the ground. that night there was a horrendous storm & my dog didn't care a bit. the vet said chocolate has a calming effect on dogs. and milk chocolate isn't that bad for them (compared to dark chocolate)
so after that, when a storm was coming we'd give her a three musketeers bite size and that REALLY helped her out a LOT!! she didn't get sick, and she didn't get all crazy/shakey/nervous from the storm & thunder. apparently it's a little known fact. ask your vet--it might be better than valium for the pooch.

(12,153 posts)The last time I went anywhere on NY's Eve was 51 years ago. I was 20, single and had a date with a real cool cat named Spider. We went to a dance at Terrytown Arena in Scottsbluff, NE. Fun.

(22,845 posts)All three of us -- me, my husband and adult daughter -- were depressed and unable to feel any holiday spirit at the beginning of December. Daughter has serious depression and was hospitalized in late November.
So I set a jar on the table, along with a pen and some small slips of paper, and told them that this was a gratitude jar. You write down something you're thankful for, and put the paper in the jar. I got the idea from our older daughter, who used it successfully with a spoiled kid in her last nanny job.
Neither of them felt like doing it, but I left it there and wrote something every now and then. Then I reminded my husband to try adding something - if only to make an example for our daughter. He started doing it too. After a couple of weeks, with no prodding from us, our daughter was adding to the jar, secretly, at night. Now the jar is full of slips of paper. We will take turns reading them to one another tonight right after dinner.
