Store bought and made: Hebrew National with white diced onion, Homemade chili and organic cheddar cheese. Bus was toasted and lightly buttered store bought hot dog buns
Chain/shop/hole in the wall Hot Dog: Ive had one in LA and Phili but cant remember the shop names, just remember the lines at the time(I was a teenager at the time).
Ive moved to the Northeast recently(PA specifically) and got a dog at whats is called "the O" in Pittsburgh. Pretty good hot dog with a natural casing like I had back home. They have huge piles of fries with cheese and or gravy too.
Anybody else?

(36,686 posts)they're pretty good. (i hear hot dogs are bad for you. but i smoke, so...)

(721 posts)will have to look that up. I became a vegan in California and gave up meat for a long time but after about a decade started to crave fish and cheese in particular. Then came back some memories of particular cuts of meats and I was off to the races again, although my diet is still mostly fruits and veges.
Just got a hankering after talking with some friends here about burgers and hot dogs.

(36,686 posts)i was gonna say something about not getting too into meat again since you seemed to have broken the habit and are eating more healthy--(i eat terribly btw) but you certainly don't need advice from me on that.
have fun! (fun's important. that's my advice)

(5,255 posts)Sabrett's dogs, which you can buy in the stores locally but not (AFAIK) nationwide, stewed in nasty-ass blood-warm water for ten hours, on a sad white bread bun, topped with overcooked commercial sauerkraut and nameless whole grain mustard. All for under $2!
Either that, or Walter's in Larchmont.

(12,132 posts)I'll settle for the Chicago Dog at Sonic. It's cheap and tasty. Like me. We have a place here called Hot Dog Heaven and they are pretty good but the people working there are kinda rude. Not the funny, on-purpose rude that's all in good fun. just ass-holyish. And they cost more than Sonic.
For home dogs it's always Hebrew National. Mustard and relish. My favorite way to cook them is to slice them almost in half and slap them on the griddle while toasting the bun with garlic butter on the other half of the griddle. eta~ sauerkraut. Not always but often enough that I shouldn't have forgotten it.
Second favorite is lots of chili and cheese.

(17,943 posts)We were bummed to find that out when planning our trip there last October. That was going to be one of our first stops, too.
Portillo's had good hot dogs. Interestingly, they have a Portillo's in Orange County, CA, which we've tried and liked it. edit: http://www.portillos.com/
I actually really like Costco's, hot dogs from the food stand. They're great!
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)man that sucks.
Costco is good - And you get the dog and a drink for like 3 bucks and it's a biggun.

(4,033 posts)make sure they give you one of the freshest ones off the grill. The longer they're on the grill and the blacker they become, they are horrible, terrible and awful.
Also don't go into the "O" any time after midnight. There have been murders and assaults outside it's door.
BTW, welcome to the "burgh.

(721 posts)and it was hopping for a thursday night. Lots of college students in this section of Pgh. They literally had about 45 hot dogs cooking all at once. I guess they do a good business
mrmpa
(4,033 posts)they sell 6 packs so that's also a big part of their profit line. It is mostly college kids, on the weekends visitors to the museum and other sites stop in. Also on the weekend the non-students from the neighborhood and adjoiningg neighborhoods also stop in and that's when trouble begins to brew. The typical student versus townie attitudes.

Daisy Brand Natural Casing Frankfurters are a long-time Chicago favorite. A perfectly seasoned combination of pork, and beef are stuffed into natural casings, hand linked and fully cooked over hickory smoke.
The result is a delicious and juicy Frankfurter that you'll be amazed by. They are great cooked on the grill, as well as steamed, simmered, or microwaved. try them and experience what a truly great Frankfurter tastes like. Serve it Chicago Style on a poppy seed bun, garnished with mustard, onions, tomato, cucumber, sport peppers, and celery salt. This is not your typical hot dog!
Vienna beef hot dogs are really good - and more widely available.
Can't beat the Char Dog at Wiener Circle. Come for the food and stay for the show

At home, I like these:

(721 posts)Ball park franks. And a brand Im not familiar with Giant Eagle(I think this is the store brand but they were just as expensive)

(28,394 posts)And they are rather expensive! They are good though-- and they are lower in sodium and fat than pork hot dogs.
LWolf
(46,179 posts)god-awful cheap hot dog and bun, cooked on a stick on a campfire after a day's hiking, with yellow mustard.
I'm sure it was the appetite I'd worked up, rather than the dog, that made it seem so good.
One other place...the Munch Box in Chatsworth, CA, a family owned stand where you can get hamburgers and hotdogs and fries covered in their greasy chili and some other stuff.

Preferably with some nice, greasy, hand-cut fries. And, I love those hot tamales, too.

(6,437 posts)Great fries and onion rings too. I recently went all in and did the foot long with Mac andcheese, chili, hot sauce, bacon, and onion rings. Messiest thing I have ever eaten but oh so delicious.
Not necessarily a dog but a half smoked at Ben's Chili Bowl in DC is probably the best thing in thies'd food category, period.

(21,875 posts)Made one when I was in Nevada. You can't just walk into a market there and buy Vienna Beef Hot Dogs, poppyseed buns, neon green relish, or sport peppers.
So I did the best I could to come as close to the real thing as I could.
Found out afterwards that Sonic has them, and I tried one, and it was pretty damned good, but I thought my home-made one was better.

(21,875 posts)My hot dogs as a kid came from the Woolworth's lunch counter and a long-gone "railroad car" style diner in Beverly Massachusets called the "Miss Beverly Diner."
From either location, they were served in toasted "top loader" buns (the kind that have toastable exposed bread on the sides rather than crust). I don't remember having anything on them other than mustard. I would get one with a milkshake (often called a "frappe"
. They would mix it in a huge industrial blender thing and pour you a tall glass, and bring the steel mixing canister to you, which contained enough to fill a SECOND tall glass.
Those...as they say...were the DAYS.

Excellent! Nothing like a hot dog at the ballpark. And like someone else said upthread, they're in that hot dog water and cook perfectly that way.
