They were going to call it "The Car Doors".

(33,688 posts)Love that sinister minor key change for the chorus, which has a really creepy feel. Right up my alley.
Always loved this one too, though the video is SO 80s it's almost painful to watch. Ric Ocasek's snarky ironic detachment is the only thing about it that isn't cringe-worthy. V. cool Kraftwerk-y feel to it, tho.

(16,327 posts)Got to see The Cars here in SF back in the day. Wang Chung (!) opened for them and blew the roof off the Cow Palace. The Cars set was a little bit anticlimactic, to be honest.
Was surprised at how much I loved the reboot with Rundgren.

(9,893 posts)There were so many good ones that I find it hard to choose.
I really liked Elliot Easton's guitar work.

(65,042 posts)He was fast, precise, and super tasteful. Was doing the two hand tapping thing on Candy-O when people were still asking "Van who?"
For me, his coolest thing is that you could sing his solos. They were songs within the song. I betcha you could hum the solo from "Just What i Needed" right now! I sure could. The one from Candy-O too. And that countrified thing on Best Friend's Girl.
And the whammy bar work on blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
I better stop now.

(12,132 posts)couldn't even try to pick a favorite. I liked Ric Ocasek's solo album, Beatitude, too but I never kept up with his other stuff.

(78,249 posts)They beat out George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers for Best New Band back in the day (early '80s). I heard George say to an interviewer, "If we were in a club and they were in the one next door, which one do you think would be jumping at 1 in the morning?"
I don't know, but that would have been one hell of a scene at closing time!

(65,042 posts)Love both songs tremendously, but the way it changes gears with just a half second between songs is really cool.
Thanks for this thread K. The Cars are one of my all time faves.
They have the best unknown guitar player ever. Elliot Easton is a BEAST!
Not my style. The only thing I liked about Ric Ocasek was his girlfriend (Czech and balance, I guess).
