From the Farmer's Almanac:
Full Worm Moon March As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.

All I know was that I saw a giant full moon just above the horizon to the east at around 7PM.

This is a truly wonderful picture of the moon.
I wish I had the capability to take such a picture...
Thank you for this, and for the history of the name.

(19,376 posts)4. Thanks Peggy.
You know, as much as you love photography, you should really consider a long lens. It opens up a whole new world. This was taken with a Nikkor 70/200mm 1:2.8GII. Somewhat expensive, but it's a pretty fast lens and I do a lot of low light work. There are slower lenses that are more reasonably priced and will work great for daylight shots.
