Growing Up Willie On the occasion of his father's 82nd birthday, Lukas Nelson opens up about growing

Growing Up Willie
On the occasion of his father's 82nd birthday, Lukas Nelson opens up about growing up on the road and following in Dad's footsteps.

Like his father, Lukas Nelson's a charmer. When I casually mention my birthday's two days before Willie's on April 29, Lukas asks my age. "Twenty-four?" he guesses. Higher, I tell him. "Higher? Okay, twenty-seven." Not quite, I say giggling more than I should. "My limit is twenty-seven," he says in his faint Austin drawl. "You have a very youthful voice."

You can't help but like Lukas, just as you can't help but love Willie. They share the same soulful, world-weary eyes, the same barely-there, pencil-thin lips. That devilish country boy grin that warns sticking around will get you in trouble. They live for their music. They live to make music. And they're pretty damned good at it, too.

"Last week, we had a secret show with Neil [Young] in San Luis Obispo, then I flew up to Maui to spend time with Dad and Mom, so we were hanging out, then I had this one-off show in the Bahamas playing a wedding with the band," Nelson says. "I flew into Los Angeles this morning, leave tonight to fly to Ft. Lauderdale, then to the Bahamas, back to Maui, then Fresno."

Don't know if you know Lukas or not, but he is the real thing. Seen him many times and is one of my favorite artists. Guy can play that strat and sings like his Daddy but with a rougher edge. This is his year with the new tour with Neil young coming out this summer....

Blatant sexism. Can't a person ever get noticed for his mind instead of his looks? (sarcasm face thingie here)

Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard have teamed up over the years, from their 1983 classic "Pancho and Lefty" to their Last of the Breed album and tour with Ray Price, but as Haggard has said, they only do it when the material is right. The duo linked, though, once they heard "Django and Jimmie," a tribute to Nelson and Haggard's respective heroes, Django Reinhardt and Jimmie Rodgers (written by Jimmy Melton and Jeff Prince). "It pulled my heard right out," says Haggard. "I thought, 'That's a pretty good song.'"

It became the genesis of their new album, out June 2nd. In honor of Nelson's 82nd birthday, enjoy this 10-minute video – filmed at Austin's Arlyn Studios – which gives a rare glimpse into Haggard and Nelson working in the studio, full of weed and jokes. ("Can I borrow some money to get home?" Haggard asks Nelson.) "It’s almost surreal," says producer Buddy Cannon, of being part of it.

And lukas is wonderful as well! I saw him play with his dad in 2004 with Bob Dylan on a tour in minor league baseball fields.
Willie and lukas together in "just breathe" is very moving!
