I'm doing my best to be supportive to the small businessman, but a pattern is emerging. Either I find people who are too busy to return calls because they are legitimately busy, or I find people who say they are willing to do the work, until I mention that I insist they pull a permit. And it's just a minor replacement job.
I don't see the advantage to the person hiring when they have to take risks on someone they hardly know.
Anyone know a quick and easy way to filter through the list of possibilities out there? I assume Angie's List will be a possibility.

(15,810 posts)When you (easily) post your job there, the contractors are paying a small fee to bid on the job. You get up to five bids within 24 hours of folks who could do the job. You'll also be able to see their customers' feedback.
I've had them out to the job site to firm things up. Just started using them and am happy, though none of my jobs required a permit.

Back when I was working, it sometimes took a couple of weeks or so for an inspector to check on a job and then one had to be ready to be there when he was or one had to wait again till the next time he could inspect the job.
The only times I knew other contractors pulled a permit was for new construction or major remodeling jobs.

(46,745 posts)This isn't a major remodeling job. The one reason why I would want them to pull a permit is just to make sure the work is done right and to make sure the guy carries his own liability. I'll look into it more and with your link, this is going to get easier!
