This summer I've developed a watermelon habit, sometimes two or even three times a day.

A wonderful man sells fruits and vegetables out of his truck and trailer on Tuesdays and Fridays across the highway from the post office.

He usually has these huge boxes of seedless watermelons so many in the small village of less than 1000 are hooked like me.

I cut the watermelon to bite-sized pieces along with other melon (cantaloupe, crenshaw, and favorite honeydew) plus blueberries plus strawberries plus nectarines or peaches or whatever but the base is that wonderful watermelon.

When the rind goes in compost, within hours the inner surface is black with ants that quickly remove any remaining red.

Yum.

Me too, but I like watermelon sherbet.
Hard to find, and only in the summer.

I totally missed the word "times" the first time I read that, and went on to wonder how anyone could ever eat three watermelons a day.

my grandmother was babysitting me, and I always looked hungry to her. So one day I think she fed me an entire watermelon. I broke out in hives, and have never been able to eat watermelon since.

But now I'm craving watermelon rind pickles.

"Don't waste anything" philosophy of a Midwestern farmer family.

Blend with just a little sugar and freeze in molds. Great low-cal desert.
