From wikipedia:

US version: Marathon[edit]
A US version, called "Marathon", was manufactured by Mars Inc and first sold in August 1973. The bright red packaging had printed on it a ruler with inch (8) and cm (20) markings on the reverse demonstrating that it was as long as it claimed. It was discontinued in October 1981, though similar products remain on the market.

Thanks President Reagan.

My bad because I forgot about them. Once I was no longer a kid, I went to the movie theater concession for popcorn and no longer looked at the candy offerings. So it was my fault that I had the impression Flicks were obsolete...until I saw them in the supermarket. And when I checked on a trip to the movies, sure enough, they were still there.

The package says "candy", but given a choice between a Rolaid/Tums or Necco wafers, I'd choose the Rolaids.

It's an awsomely floor-to-ceiling candy old and new.

and when you grew up, if you went into military service they sold cigs in the PX and your drill sergeants gave you smoke breaks and they even served cigarette 4-packs with C-rats and delivered cartons in your sundries packs in the combat zone.

It was only much later that they realized having troops puffing and panting in combat and emitting smoke that gave your position away might not be such a good idea. Not to mention the overall health of your warfighters.

I had dabbled before, but it was only after my induction that I became a regular smoker. The greatest invention ever was the plastic case they sold in the PX to protect your cigarette pack out in the field!

36. Our cases had a compartment for matches or Zippo
Sun Sep 20, 2015, 11:43 PM
Sep 2015

As an aside: In Vietnam I had a Zippo with a full-color Screaming Eagle plaque affixed to it. After I was medevac'd, the lighter didn't come back with my personal effects. So I wrote my little brother, still in-country, to send me that kind of Zippo. He sent me one from a local Vietnamese shop that had a crude insignia engraved. Not what I wanted, but it was from my little brother, so I kept it.

The trouble with Zippos was that you had to refill them with fluid and replace the flints. And most guys (me included) tended to overfill them, so we'd end up with an annoying fluid burn on our leg. In Vietnam, that was just another place that invited jungle rot.

I thought I was pretty smart, but it took me a long time to figure out how to refill a Zippo so it wouldn't overfill and burn me.

A perfectly good candy that added "real fruit juice" but went from sweet to sour.

Totally ruined a candy that has been around for decades. They are just jelly beans by Just Born but they destroyed them in the reformulation.

I am still mad about Mike & Ikes. I only bought them around Halloween but they were my left over Halloween candy favorite.

I'm not sure about Just Born as a company. They were the ubiquitous jelly bean at Easter for decades but have been nowhere to be seen for about 5 years. I just don't know how you go from being in every store in town to disappearing completely?
