I first heard this piece in 1989 (ok, I Googled). It was featured in an advertisement for British Airways in Australia. I'm sure it was also used in the UK, US, Canada... But everyone was stunned. Almost no-one had heard the piece and no-one knew what it was called. A few days later, we knew the name of the opera and the composer's name.
The whole opera is beautiful, but this is the high point. Definitely.
