and I can see the changes in my body already. I sleep better. Eat better. And have fewer aches and pains. I find it hard after dinner on my fast days. I get a little hungry. But so far my willpower holds out till the next day. I'm not good at diets. I'm not disciplined enough for a full on diet. But this one works and will be a permanent lifestyle change. That way I know I can keep the weight off when I reach my weight loss goal 93 pounds from now.

(6,931 posts)the fast diet? you're not fasting, are you?
applegrove
(118,793 posts)calories two days a week, separated by a few days, and eat normally the rest of the time. You only have to have the willpower to get through one diet day at a time. For me it is a lifestyle change. My stomach is smaller. I pay more attention to what I eat. I feel really good being healthier. I no longer drink so that not something I had to give up. If you did drink you still could on normal eating days. Really the big thing is that you do not feel you are depriving yourself because there is always tomorrow. I'm pretty happy with it.

(26,001 posts)Are you giving up any particular food group (meat, desserts, booze, etc.,) or generally having less of everything?
applegrove
(118,793 posts)I guess that means a bit of dessert or booze. But only on the 5 days you are not fasting 500 calories.

(111,352 posts)like giving up whole swaths of a balanced diet. You'll just naturally start to choose foods with the most nutrition for the caloric buck on those 500 calorie days.
I do suggest soups. Drinking water before a meal does nothing, the water goes right through. Soup triggers all those receptors in your stomach, keeping you full and delaying gastric emptying long enough to be satisfied on less food.

(118,793 posts)part of the protein and the veggies. Then I have coffee with dinner. Then lots of liquids that evening to keep my stomach fooled. I'm hungry but happy about it when I go to bed. And I daydream about the full meals I will have the next day.

(111,352 posts)last April-May. It's a bit extreme but not any more extreme than starving yourself long term on one of the really silly deficiency diets out there.
Back in the bad old days when treatments for rheumatoid arthritis were almost worse than the disease, I discovered that fasting for a couple of days would lessen the symptoms sharply during a flareup and that the symptoms would be decreased even when I started to eat again. I couldn't do it when I was a nurse, passing out on the job was frowned on, so I had to start taking the by then better drugs.

Simple enough-- fast for a day, eat normally for two or three. I'll see if it helps my blood sugar.

(2,560 posts)applegrove, I believe you posted about this a couple of months ago. I thought "That's interesting" and promptly forgot about it. I'll be 65 this year and could lose (fortunately only) a few pounds. But, I'm aware I'm not 25 any more. Thank you for your update which also served as a reminder.
Trajan, thanks for the links to the UK site and to Dr Moseley's videos. I live in Holland and can watch BBC, but don't watch much TV. That means I miss the rubbish, but it also means I miss a few pearls now and then.
