So most of you probably know that Marijuana is legal in Oregon and recreational sales opened on October 1st. I had not smoked marijuana since high school maybe 25 years ago and after some thought decided to give it a try since its legal, it was the legality thing that kept me away in the past.
Anyways today I went to the dispensary just down the street from my home and picked up two very low THC strains because I am a beginner, one that is supposed to be an uplifting high that is high in CBD and the other that is a mellow high.
I just smoked a little of the uplifting one and wow, it's really pleasant with me feeling quite nice and not too impaired. This is supposed to be good for pain and I could see that, you feel good throughout your body and it's very nice.
I really don't see what the fuss is about, this should be legal in all 50 states and it definitely should be available to anyone with a medical condition. Anyways feel free to ask me anything.

(2,273 posts)I basically told them I am a complete newbie and have zero experience and the guy was great about his recommendations and why I should go those routes. Along with how much to try for a beginner. Really nice experience and the shop was bright and pleasant, did not look like a crazy headshop which made the experience feel more like a wine bar than some childish behavior.

(22,271 posts)When I was young it relieved my anxiety. Now that I'm older, it does wonders for my arthritis. I know this because a couple of years ago I took a trip to Oklahoma and Arkansas and, of course, didn't bring any with me. After about 7 days my fingers began to ache and by 10 days I could grip the steering wheel to drive. Back in California the first thing I did when I got home was take a few hits. Within 24 hours (and more bowlfuls) my fingers were back to normal. NOBODY can tell me it's not medicine.
dilby
(2,273 posts)And make it legal for recreational use.

(22,271 posts)and it WILL pass this time.

(9,888 posts)were me. I liked the stuff, but it did NOT relieve anxiety. Quite the opposite. I'm waiting patiently for legality in Pennsylvania. I'm 57, I hope I live long enough. Of course, I said I'd never live to see a black President and I didn't think gay marriage would come to this backwater, but BAM!

(12,132 posts)Legality and current company drug policies are the only thing keeping me from smoking. I don't feel I suffered at all from being high during a lot of the 80s. I had great times with good friends and good music and good food.
But I got married and had kids and had other priorities for the last 30 years so it's been a while but I vote every chance I get for legalization here in FL. And the day they open a legal dispensary I'll be in line.
I have a ton of records I never got to hear while high.
ETA~ I'll be 52 in December so I still have a ways to go to before retirement but if we haven't gotten our shit together by then and already have it legalized, I'll be going rogue. I'm not planning to jeopardize the means to my retirement but once I don't have to pee in a cup you can bet stupid prohibition laws will be at the bottom of my shit-to-worry-about list.

(2,273 posts)You don't have to be resident of Oregon to buy, just don't take it home.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)gonna do that. I've been around a lot this side of the country but never been further west than Possum Kingdom in Texas. Got a lot of traveling to do to get caught up on visiting that side of the country.
Lol, I get my first shot at it the end of this month. Flying to Denver to see a concert (got a crazy deal on tickets so it's actually cheaper to fly there and stay with a friend and see the opening show of the tour than to drive to Atlanta and stay in a hotel for one of the last shows of the tour)
Alas, work knows I'm going to Denver and they know how I feel about legalization so I can bet my number comes up in the monthly "random" bullshit.
dilby
(2,273 posts)But you should still check out a dispensary while you are in town and just see all the different varieties, way different than when I was a kid and all you knew was it was weed and the cost, everyone said they had the best stuff.

(2,273 posts)The medicinal strain was $35 for an 1/8 and the lazy strain was $25 for 1/8 and no taxes on it. The amount for someone like me should probably last a while, I barely used any yesterday and if I were to use this in place of alcohol I would save a ton of money.
i'm in colorado, but there are only a few shops in town, so little competition means people are paying 50 bucks an eighth here.
dilby
(2,273 posts)Plus lots of dispensaries in every neighborhood. I live a 3 minute walk from the place I went and their most expensive was $40 1/8.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)as long as no more than three are mature. i have a black thumb and not sure that the husband is much better. i get home grown from a buddy.
In California it's twice that. $60.00 for an 1/8 of the good stuff. I was reduced to buying from the dispensary (which totally doesn't exist because our local County Board of Supervisors banned them) beginning last May when I ran out of my homegrown (which I totally didn't do because it's now illegal to grow outside and THE COUNTY will slap a $1,000 PER PLANT fine) and had to buy from the dispensary for a few months. It was good pot but the expense was OTT.
dilby
(2,273 posts)The prices will increase here in January when the apply a 25% tax but till then it's cheaper than alcohol.
Lizzie Poppet
(10,164 posts)Talk prior to legalizing recreational use was that the taxes were going to create a gap between legit retailers and street sellers. That seems not to have happened. And people buying from a dispensary know exactly what they're getting: sativa or indica, what strain, THC, CBD, etc...
dilby
(2,273 posts)Being able to walk into a dispensary and have multiple options to choose from with the THC levels tested and a budtender to explain what to expect from each strain and what they are good for, pain, anxiety, depression, sleep and everything else. Along with which ones won't make me devour my kitchen or get stuck on my couch and watch cartoons. It felt very safe as opposed to a dealer that has some random bag that will blow my mind and melt my face.

(6,261 posts)Very expensive, though. I think I recall a bag of 5 chocolate chip cookies costing along the lines of $60 or so.
I'm not particularly interested in getting high and I don't like smoking either, but I've found that liquid THC (brand name Zoot Drops) added to a glass of water and drunk an hour before bed time makes me wonderfully mellow and helps me sleep better than any sleeping pill I've ever had prescribed. It too is expensive, though: $45 for a tiny bottle that will only last a few days.
Better any day than the self-medicating I used to do with alcohol because that nearly killed me a number of times and caused permanent health damage.
davidpdx
(22,000 posts)Maybe I can find someone to go in half with me.
The drops sound cool. Too bad I couldn't get them back to Korea though. I'd love to have something like that to help me sleep.

(3,919 posts)and breakdown of thc and cannabanoids. if you are just starting out: do not eat the whole cookie. try 1/8 to 1/4 and wait a couple of hours - at least that much time.
the standard dose is 2gm - 7gms (depending on the state you are in). this amount would easily overdose a newbie or sensitive types. personally, i am the sensitive type & can only tolerate .25gm or less.
start slow. too much is not fun.

(35,438 posts)"professional marijuana"?
dilby
(2,273 posts)The dispensaries that are selling medical and recreational are divided so if you don't have a medical card you don't get access to the edibles, concentrates and other stuff. Oregon recreational users can just buy the flowers, seeds and immature plants.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)How much does it cost to get an immature plant, and how long does it take to grow them to a point you can harvest buds, or whatever you are supposed to do with them? Can they continue to grow as you harvest them, and just replace old growth with new, or do you have to harvest the whole plant at once, and start all over again?
And can you grow them from your own harvested seed, or are the plants all "grafted" as I was once told by a supposed plant (and weed) expert.
I probably can't afford mj, and I would be very interested in trying it for medical uses, not recreation. I don't know if my doc would give me a medical prescription...never asked him. He might. I do take a few "controlled" drugs and prescription drugs that I might be able to almost eliminate if mj would work for me.
dilby
(2,273 posts)I think seeds are about $10 each but you can get up to an ounce or more from one plant depending on your grow situation indoor or outdoor and obviously new people are not going to get the yield someone with 40 years experience gets. Our newspaper here had a reporter that did two plants one indoor and one out door and she had no experience. I think it took 60-90 days to harvest and she got an ounce on each plant. She basically spent $20 plus the stuff like fertilizer, soil, pots and lights for her indoor grow and came out with 2 ounces of product equivalent to $270. What was interesting was her outdoor plant produced about as much as her indoor the upside to indoor is you can do it year round. But an ounce is a lot, it would probably last me 3-4 months.
When it comes to harvest, you harvest the whole plant when it's ready so you one plant is good for one harvest. But again, if you have a green thumb you can basically take $10 which is equivalent to 1 gram of marijuana and turn it into 1 ounce of it.

(3,569 posts)of Recreational marijuana? Marijuana as a word is is offensive enough
dilby
(2,273 posts)And personal could mean recreational or medical. I think it's better to use the term recreational since it specifies I am not using it for medical purposes and it doesn't take away from people who do. I would hate to lump people together who have real medical issues and use marijuana for it with people who are using it for enjoyment.

(1,423 posts)through Oregon on US 97. Was looking for an open recreational shop but could not find one on 97. I was told that a lot of municipalities are dragging their feet do to extreme right wing reactionaries who are fanatically opposing the opening of shops in some of the towns. *sigh*
Right away when I got to NorCal I found out the Feds had crushed a large number of small dispensaries in the towns I frequented. I could have scored some street stuff but decided to wait it out. I didn't really feel safe until I got back to Washington State. But if I understand your post, its readily available on the West side of Oregon just like Washington.
On a side note...we crossed over Mount Shasta, No snow on the mountain at all and Shasta Lake frighteningly low, by hundreds of feet.
dilby
(2,273 posts)They cling to their guns and Bibles and for the most part leave the rest of the state alone but if you were in Southern Oregon it may have been hard to find a dispensary. There is a good app for your phone that can help you locate legal dispensaries near you along with their menus and prices.
Lizzie Poppet
(10,164 posts)There are ten in Bend, but that's about it along all of 97 (until you get all the way north to I84 and go west a few miles to The Dalles).
Lots of retail sellers in Southern Oregon, though: four in Roseburg, three each in Medford and Ashland, two each in Rogue River, Phoenix and Talent, one in Merlin, and even two in tiny little Shady Cove, about twenty-five miles east towards Crater Lake.
Here's a site with every dispensary (medical and retail) in Oregon: http://www.oregon.gov/oha/mmj/Pages/directory.aspx

(27,630 posts)Marijuana does not agree with me, I know from experience. But if it helps other people with pain, then I hope they get to smoke as much marijuana as they need to.
