The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI DEFY you to name a Supergroup better than the Traveling Wilburys
You can't so fess up just how much you love them!!!
Shame two of them are now playing in that great Rock and Roll band in heaven.
I love how they paid tribute to Roy Orbison in this video, who passed away soon after the first album was released.
Gotta love all the photos of when the Wilburys were young'uns. Plus it was probably the last video ever made with Roy Orbison singing in it.
This is post Roy Orbison from the 2nd album but I love the harmonies in this song

(4,138 posts)5 guitar-playing singer-songwriters, struggling with relevancy in the 80s (especially Dylan, whose 80s output is mostly crap) doesn't seem like the makings of anything special. And the cutesy gimmick was another warning sign. But it worked, at least for the first album.
The song I always wonder about is "Tweeter and the Monkey Man." Friendly tip of the hat to Springsteen, or a catty diss at a supposed rival? Could be either with Dylan, but it seems a fair bit less vitriolic than typical for a Dylan callout song.

(17,195 posts)Okay, not rock. But you'd be in awe of some of the personnel in the 50's jazz groups (if you liked jazz, that is). The cool thing about jazz is how often the true greats play with each other (so to speak). Anyway, I have no problem declaring a love for the Wilburys. Any group with George Harrison in it is off to a good start.

(50,983 posts)we have played their existing material to death. Now we must ration listening to it. It is some excellent stuff.
Too bad they weren't around long enough to create more. It's amazing that the Traveling Wilburys aren't more well known and appreciated.

(95,337 posts)maybe they could adopt Neil Young or Graham Nash or even Jon Anderson. Heck even Robert Plant could make a great long lost Wilbury

(14,275 posts)I have managed to compile nearly everything recorded by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, George Harrison, ELO, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. The play list is massive and provides me hours of pleasure.
