"Literally"

Is there a more unnecessarily used word today?
Everybody it seems uses it for no reason.

For example...listening to Anderson Cooper tonight in San Bernardino. He said, "Doctors have to literally carry their equipment to the scene".

Really? Well I'm glad he said that because otherwise I'd think they just figuratively brought equipment there.

It is overused (and inappropriately used) by individuals cutting across all age groups and social statuses. I have observed that it is used when the speaker is attempting to add gravitas to a situation that does not warrant it. Rather than add to their credibility, it detracts from it.

It is the most annoying filler word to rise to popularity in recent memory.
