I'd say it's a moot point when you're talking about the hardcore fandom communities. But Star Wars was always much more of a mainstream pop culture phenomenon, so it has way more casual fans.

My co-worker and I used to debate about different fandoms including star wars, star trek, doctor who, harry potter, lord of the rings, supernatural, buffy the vampire slayer, etc. She and I differed on whether star trek or star wars was better.
