Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin gives fans an update on The Winds of Winter

THE WINDS OF WINTER is not finished.

Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You're disappointed, and you're not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed... but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me. For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, "I have completed and delivered THE WINDS OF WINTER" on or before the last day of 2015.

But the book's not done.

last spring, he thought Halloween of 2015 was a reasonable deadline. Then, at the end of the summer, he thought 12/31/15 was reasonable. So, I figure he must be reasonably close. Hopefully, by the end of Season 6 so the book can at least beat the final 2 episodes... if not, by the summer so season 6 is still fresh in our minds.

Maybe they could shorten that be a few days or even a week or two, but he sounds like he is not close at all.

until I actually see the pre-order announcement on Amazon.

I will read and enjoy it whether it gets here before the season begins, in the middle of the Season or next summer. Planning to re read the first 5 before I tackle #6 anyway

the final book of the Kingkiller Chronicles will come out while I am still alive to read it. Since I am 65, there is no guarantee.

From the link

"Nor is it likely to be finished tomorrow, or next week. Yes, there's a lot written. Hundreds of pages. Dozens of chapters. (Those 'no pages done' reports were insane, the usual garbage internet journalism that I have learned to despise). But there's also a lot still left to write. I am months away still... and that's if the writing goes well. (Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.) Chapters still to write, of course... but also rewriting. I always do a lot of rewriting, sometimes just polishing, sometimes pretty major restructures."

Personally I wonder if he'll actually survive to finish the series.

Last spring and into the summer, he thought Halloween of 2015 was a reasonable deadline. Then, at the end of the summer and into the Fall, he thought the 12/31/15 deadline was reasonable. If he thought that, he must be pretty far into the book.

Plus, after the heavily positive responses he received online to his announcement, he said he feels excited and energized.
