(102,468 posts)I dress in layers and peel as appropriate to changing temps--as any half way intelligent person would do in colder climes.
What really gets me, though, is seeing all the kids--sometimes elementary school aged-- sent off to the bus stop and school dressed in shorts when it is well under freezing temps and/or heavy blowing snow/wind.

(4,033 posts)the neighboring township does not bus their kids to the schools. Last week when the windchill was about 3 degrees Fahrenheit while driving through I saw one middle school age girl carrying her books, wearing a zippered sweatshirt (looked thin) and a pair of yoga pants, tennis shoes with no socks. A block later there was a young boy, with shorts on, gloves, sweatshirt and at least a book bag.
I wanted to find their parents and throttle them. This an above middle class neighborhood, with property taxes averaging over $4000 a year and the school district is in the top 5 in the state and in the top 100 of the nation.

(9,901 posts)I'm a trucker, running from Los Angeles to parts east. I pack several pairs of Levi's, and a half dozen or so pairs of shorts. I'll wear long pants if it's below 30, with high winds/below 0 wind chill, other then that, it's shorts.
Don't care if someone thinks I look like an idiot, I'm comfortable, and that's what counts.

They're still in T shirts and shorts.
Guess it depends on what you're used to.

(1,958 posts)a few years ago. He had major surgery so I went down there to help him recover. I went to Walgreen's to get a prescription and the pharmicist said "your're not from here." I told him which prescription I was getting and he remembered my dad. It was a beautiful January day, sunny, no wind, and 50°. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I saw locals wearing heavy jackets and stocking hats.
I was listening to a Phoenix talk radio station and one guy was saying he saw some people in a swimming pool. He said they must be Minnesotans because it was only 70°. In Minnesota, on the first sunny 40° day, college girls are out on the rooftops sunbathing.

I'm OK with looking like an idiot. Which is a good thing since I often do look like an idiot.

(10,893 posts)can't afford winter clothes, or they don't care about getting sick. In addition to seeing some walk around in shorts here in Humboldt during the winter, I've seen people wear flip flops and a few others actually walking around barefoot when it's 50 degrees and raining. Not only are there puddles and mud, but there is a risk of stepping on something like spit, rocks, bugs, or broken glass.
