The problem:
In the pastures of snow leopard country, domestic livestock and wild snow leopard prey species increasingly compete for limited food resources.
When wild ibex and argali no longer find enough fodder, their numbers dwindle - and the snow leopard's populations decrease along with them.
The solution:
The community of Khyber, in Pakistan's remote Gilgit-Baltistan province, has found an innovative solution to this problem: They want to use an arid slab of land above the village to cultivate alfalfa for both livestock and wild animals!
In summer, they plan to harvest the fast-growing alfalfa as wintertime fodder for their goats and sheep. In spring and fall on the other hand, the fields will be left undisturbed, so that the wild ibex who live in the area can profit and feed.
In the end, everyone benefits: people, livestock, ibex, and - ultimately - the snow leopards!
