As improbable as it sounds, the Garlic Capital of the World is located at the opposite end of Santa Clara County, CA from $ilicon Valley! The whole town reeks of the stuff, and they have an annual garlic festival complete with garlic ice cream!

every year so that it will come back the next year. I think you can just plant the bulbs like you can plant onion bulbs just straight into the ground.

I live in Minnesota and learned from (IIRC) the U of M gardening site that the California garlic from the grocery store will not grow well here. I get my hard-neck (Cali stuff is soft-neck) bulbs from the local farmer's market and plant the individual cloves in the fall. It's way better than the store-bought.
