Flag Day While the Fourth of July has become an all-round celebration of US life, Flag Day has kept more of a local character, with traditions rooted in the township or the county, the city or the state capital. And much more than for family festivals, it feels right to be celebrating it with your team, club or class. Every year, millions of people discover their inner Betsy Ross and make their own versions of Old Glory, in everything from stained glass to potato prints to rows of flowers. The men who adopted the first flag, way back in 1777, could hardly have imagined it. Three cheers for all things red, white and blue! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/flag-day/National Bourbon Day Nobody needs an excuse to enjoy the odd tipple, but Bourbon Day gives the perfect excuse to dust off a bottle of this fine whiskey and have a few glasses. Legend has it that the day is the anniversary of the very first time this famous drink was distilled in the late 1700s and whatever the truth of this it is surely a day worth celebrating. There are plenty of ways for whiskey lovers and others to get in the swing of things to enjoy this special day. Hotels and restaurants can enter the spirit of the occasion by organizing a dinner in honor of Bourbon. Individuals can entertain family and friends by trying their hand at some old or new Bourbon cocktail recipes and add a little splash of whiskey to a meal to make it a night to remember. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bourbon-day/
World Blood Donor Day The history of blood donation goes back further than you might expect, reaching as far back as the 17th century. The medical specialists of the time knew that blood was a vital element in the body and losing too much of it was bound to have tragic consequences on the patient. So it was that experimentation began, and a whole new breed of heroes was born that contribute their blood so that others may live. Blood Donors save lives every day by giving of themselves so that accident victims and those in need of transfusions for surgeries can live. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/blood-donor-day/

(28,394 posts)2. The original "Grand Old Rag" (1906):
Charted at #1 in May 1906. The title on the recording is "The Grand Old Rag". Cohan had been inspired to write the song when he encountered a civil war veteran who was holding a tattered U.S. flag. He said to Cohan, "She's a grand old rag". The title was later changed to "You're a Grand Old Flag" after many people objected to the word "rag". From the musical, "George Washington, Jr.". Written by George M. Cohan.
