as in, our sedentary lifestyle is probably as bad for us as smoking was back when everyone did that.

Lots of other health metrics are also best controlled the same way, not to mention decreased stamina simply degrades your quality of life in just about every way.
I like to work out in the morning when I can, and the effects are noticeable throughout the day vs the days when I don't. It just makes me feel better all the way around.
