Black Cat Appreciation Day Because of superstitious beliefs in some cultures, black cats are sometimes associated with bad luck and, sadly, are more likely to be put to sleep or wait a long time to be adopted from shelters. National Thrift Shop Day A snow globe of Detroit, Michigan, a set of four tennis rackets with slightly frayed strings, clothing galore and enough housewares to make a few houses full and have some spares just in case. 1. We have a thrift shop operated by our resource center/food pantry/homeless shelter

Good place where I've picked up a few things, though I usually prefer contributing money to the resource center. Usually not earmarked, until the director and I were volunteering together for an unrelated charity and I asked him if they had any special needs.

He told me that all of those operations had outgrown their space and he was working to consolidate all of them in one place with enough space for each. I immediately became the first earmarked donor to their building fund.

We had a wonderful black cat who lived outside to the ripe old age of 20!
