The song was written by David Wiffen and recorded in 1970 by Tom Rush.

Here's Wiffen's version:

I actually like Rush's version better than that by the Cowboy Junkies, and probably better than that of Wiffen's.

It's a great song. I used to have it floating around in my head while missing my wife while stuck in airports waiting for delayed flights. Trains and planes are different of course, but the motion of missing your lover is the same.
