The group of old men in McDonald's at 6am every morning.

Every time I've been in a McDonald's in the early morning, no matter where I am in the country, almost without fail I will see a group of old men there hanging out and drinking coffee.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that. On the contrary, I think it would be interesting to hear what they are talking about. You never know, in another 25 years I might be one of them.

I know since I sit in with a couple different groups of them from time to time here in NC. The guys I sit with are R's, D's, I's but all still friends who have known each other a long time and have many common interests.

a couple of times.
We were amazed to see at least two what I would call worship services (among friends) going on. I was a bit astounded but based on the reaction of the locals this must be a norm.

But we do have local diners where there is always a clatch of older men in the morning.

I guess I haven't been around much for awhile. Been a rough few weeks as my father-in-law passed away last weekend. My wife was there for him and her mother when he died.

Maybe they are just talking about stuff like that, and coffee is only $0.99 for a small cup, which in those styrofoam cups will stay warm for half a morning. Or they could be talking about the Cubs and Indians. Who knows, as long as they are good friends having time together.

Personally, I find "old" not demeaning at all. I flinch whenever I hear "x years young," however.

Another group gathers at Candy's Diner on Rt 47.

I won't cast aspersions on the guys at the Kountry Kettle on 47 in Elburn IL, but in my experience the kitchen staff can't even do a simple Sunnyside-up egg. I don't drink coffee but that must be the sole redeeming thing there?!

One of 'em's a raging MAGA. Another of 'em is the guy who points out he's wrong by asking him questions about his assertions. And the third guy is the silent eye-roller. He's the one I exchange smiles with. The other two are always busy.
