I don't know why, I just never got around to it.

(34,136 posts)I dislike boxing and detest mobster movies so there is nothing in either of those two series of movies to attract me.
On the other hand, I am a sci fi geek so I've seen all but the newest Star Wars movie, all the Star Trek shows and movies and pretty much every sci fi movie made before 1985 I've ever had the chance to watch. But I haven't seen the Alien series - something about the thing coming out of the chest just creeps me out too much.

(25,327 posts)I was living on my parents dime. Four years later, I was on my own and voted for Jimmy Carter.
Did you know that Gerald Ford did not know how to eat a tamale? He ate it with the husk on!!! Here's the pic:
I was in college... I didn't talk to my parents or do any research for the election. I had no clue. When I got back to my co-op some of the girls were talking about Jimmy Carter. After a few minutes I realized I had made a mistake and I started putting on my coat. I thought I could go back and change my vote...
I wouldn't know how to eat a tamale either!

(13,870 posts)In 1984 poor old doomed Walter Mondale ventured down from Minnesota to South Carolina during the campaign (SC had voted for Carter in 1976, so it wasn't a totally futile effort).
In the coastal town of Beaufort he attended a fundraiser that had a shrimp boil. Boiled (usually pronounced more like 'bald') shrimp take a little bit of effort to remove the shell and dip in sauce before eating.
Mondale had his second shrimp in his hand but seemed reluctant to eat it because he was still chewing the first one. That was when he commented "they sure are crunchy" and we realized he had not removed the shell.
He should have taken a lesson from Strom Thurmond. I (twice) saw Thurmond at events that had boiled shrimp and he would ask some young intern to peel him some. After they had about 40-50 in a pile he would eat a couple, fold the rest in a napkin and put it in his pocket saying, "I'll take these home to Nancy." We could all imagine how, 4 or 5 days later, the smell would send someone to check his coat pocket in the closet.

In the summer of 1977 the hottest guy on campus invites me to a movie. He starts going on and on during the movie, "Wow, this is the greatest" and so on and so forth. I was totally lost. (70,691 posts)Well, I know the basics, or rather what appears to me to be the ONE basic, that of invading enemy territory with some kind of treasured (a ball of various shapes and sizes) until it is on the enemy throne. It takes longer to do in football of the U.S. sort than in basketball, with the latter being all herdlike running back and forth. But actually, the most personally most enjoying sports viewing (on t.v., not in person) was a soccer game while in the buzz zone, without many fans, such that I was in a meditative state and I could see the choreography of the sweeping plays across the field. But I don't invest in any teams, don't know enough for that. But the best time is during the World Cup, the last few consisting of my obtaining the noisemakers - I have the what-dya-callums from South Africa/long plastic trumpets, then the carizolas from Brazil, and I have a replica plaster/painted gold World Cup!1
So what I really enjoy is to be in a sports bar during a Cowboys game, with it totally full of ONLY Cowboy fans, and let drop that I hate the Cowboys. Somebody told me that somebody was going to kill me some day.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)I'll be attending the Cowboys-Broncos game in Denver with a friend who lives there. He's a long time Broncos fan and his family has season tickets so I'll be with them in all my Cowboys splendor. SOOOO looking forward to to it but not too worried lol. My friend will protect me even though we differ on who the best NFL team is.
I've gone down to see the Cowboys play in Tampa against the Bucs but there were seriously more Cowboys fans there than Bucs fans so it was like a home game lol.
I don't know what kind of bars you go to but I doubt the Cowboys fans are any more violent than if you did the same thing at any other team's fan bar.
A funny aside: We spent new years eve with a friend who was high school flag corp and marching band member. She always hated sports but, of course, I was watching the bowl games and whatnot and she started really getting into them. She thinks she might take up the watching of football as a pastime. Of course, I'm guiding her to Dallas and FSU so she'll have good teams to root for and/or I won't have to kick her out of my house for rooting improperly.

(1,213 posts)the only football games I saw while in high school were the games our "spirit band" had to play at.
Became a football fan at 18, when my older sister and her husband returned from his home state of Texas. Back in the Tom Landry era, w/ Danny White, Tony Dorsett, Randy White, Drew Pearson, and Ed "Too Tall" Jones.

(12,132 posts)Well, the tea is for my wife - she lives on Publix sweet tea.
A while back we decided to try a new breakfast restaurant. After a few minutes of perusing the menu we noticed there were no grits listed. The host happened to be walking by and we flagged him down and asked where on the menu could we find grits. In a thoroughly befuddled tone he asked "What is a grit?" :|
How you gonna open a breakfast place in FLORIDA and not have grits?
Sadly, the closest Krispy Kremes to me have all shut down. Not on my account though. They got all my donut money. Man, when that red sign lit up letting you know the new batch was just out of the fryer....Well, that's probably part of why I'm not allowed to have sweet tea any more. Not enough metformin on the planet to counteract what I'd do to a couple dozen Krispy Kremes.
NOT to be confused with the ones sold in gas stations and convenience stores. Only the ones from the actual donutteries are good.

I wouldn't want to tell someone I drove a hundred miles round trip for a donut (I'd do it, I just don't want to tell anyone) but If I needed that special framulator for the thingamajig and happened to drive by a Krispy Kreme to get it, well, that's perfectly reasonable.
Hell, my wife and I have seriously considered taking a long weekend to drive up to Tennessee where the only Taco Tico we know of still exists. I mean, I guess we'd look at something historic or beautiful while there but we all know it was Taco Tico what brung us.
A few years ago we went to Indianapolis for a convention and while searching for cheap hotels we found one with a Jack In The Box next door. Of course I picked that. Shittiest hotel I've ever been in but I had JitB every day for a week and would do it again. Super Tacos and Breakfast Jacks where the fuel of my high school days and they still have them but the tacos are regular size now. Still taste the same though.

(12,132 posts)We used to have a dozen or so but we're down to maybe 2 I can think of and both further than I get on a normal day. I think they just have a hard time competing with crappy Dunkin Donuts tonnage of advertising. People will take an inferior product all day because the saw it on the TV lookity-box.
When I was growing up in Texas we had a ton of fast food taco places. All of them a million times better than Taco Bell. But then TB started springing up everywhere and the small singles and regional chain stores just died off. TB is everywhere. Bleah.
But just before Christmas Santy Clause shined his favor upon me and led me to a drive up taco shack in a terrible part of town but it's close enough to work I can go there and get a 4-pack of authentic tacos al pastor and a drink for like 6 bucks. The taste just blew me away and all through christmas dinner and new years eve celebrations all I could think of was getting back to this little taco stand. I tried to go yesterday but it's such a small, family owned thing they are closed on Mondays. Today had lunch with the boss so I couldn't go but I'm there tomorrow. maybe tonight on the way home lol. Its not what I'm used to as it's shredded pork on a double layer of soft corn tortillas with a little onion and cilantro and some red sauce with just the right amount of heat but I can't get them out of my head.

(25,485 posts)It happened while he was still senator, I was being an arsehole, and trying to fly out of washington DC airport to Chicago. I normally travel first class because of my miles with the airline, but this one time, they did not have my upgraded First Class seat ready, and I threw a fit. I was giving the ticket agent a hard time at the gate, when this tall, handsome guy inserted himself into our conversation trying to make peace. I was irritated as hell at the time, and told him, unless he was going to give me his First Class seat, butt out of my business. He gave me a eloquent speech about how the airline folk had job to do,and I was not making it any easier, then I noticed his pin...I was non-political back then, and was one of those folks that never voted, but became a first time voter in 2008, when he decided to run for President. He tried to be a peacemaker that day even, and I had to seriously reflect how selfish I had been. To this day, if I get an upgrade on a flight to First Class, and a serviceman is onboard, I will request the attendants to give my seat to him. I am blessed and honored to have had this man as President for the last 8yrs..
