(12,157 posts)I really don't know whether it is daily exercise or following a modified low carb high fat diet that has gotten rid of 45 pounds of excess weight, reduced LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, resting heart rate and given me really good blood glucose control. But I am not going to test it out by reducing exercise or eating more carbs.

(17,303 posts)Losing 45 lbs is no small feat. Congrats.
No pharmaceutical aids in accomplishing any of those goals?

(12,157 posts)Low dose statin and BP med, Metformin and single dose Lantus insulin. I have reduced the Lantus from 85 units to 24 units.

(12,157 posts)When I retired a big load of toxic stress disappeared. There is evidence that stress causes a rise in BG, something to do with the flight/fight syndrome causing the liver to dump sugar to fuel whatever option one takes. I think that when you can't fight or flee to burn off the sugar it just rises in the blood causing an increase secretion of insulin to store it as fat. And then there is stress eating which in my case never included healthy foods, chips, fried pies and candy bars from the vending machine.

(25,704 posts)You have to work out vigorously for hours a day to make a dent in weight. I stopped eating breakfast decades ago to maintain weight (I drink beer every day, many calories). So from 8:30 pm to 11 am is a fast usually. I happened upon this regime semi by accident but I have gained 10 pounds in twenty years. I can deal with that.

(102,236 posts)Exercise helps a bit and is certainly good/necessary for health in other capacities, but only getting insulin spikes under control through diet will make the difference for many people.
Four years on, now, very little processed food, no pasta, bread, simple carbs of any kind and keeping complex carbs generally under 70 net grams/day (total minus fiber) has helped me immensely... But, in reality, I don't think I ever would have gotten my weight under control without my fitness walks with my dog on fairly hilly terrain. I started with 4-5 miles/day and now average 50-60 miles/week. Frankly, it is as much about mental health and offsetting the depressive nature off our current times as weight loss/maintenance, though.
After age 30, it becomes more and more difficult for nearly all of us, but especially women. Artificial sweeteners are definitely NOT the answer either.
Industry and its PR schemes are definitely NOT our friend.

(4 posts)Certain kinds of vigorous exercise will burn calories, but likely also muscle. You've captured the best exercise method for burning fat, which is walking. Lots of it, briskly. It puts your HR in that zone that's more likely to burn fat than muscle, and also keeps your muscle strong and lean, which leads to more fat-burning at rest.
Warning: All of the information in my post is completely unfettered by any scientific research. lol

Basically it says that the more you exercise, the more your body learns how to conserve calories. So it doesn't help you lose weight at all. You also have to cut down on calories ingested.

(23,656 posts)I did lose 15 lbs (over 12-18 months)with working out 3-4 times a week for an hour. Treadmill, stationary bike, weight machines. I also began cutting back on my servings. I really didn't eliminate anything from my diet, but cut my servings down by 1/4 to 1/2. After losing the 15 lbs, I didn't see a big change in my body, but then all of a sudden my waist became thinner, my upper legs thinner, my stomach flatter. It was like 1st I had to lose the excess weight, then the body shape followed. I dropped 1-2 sizes in both upper and lower body.

(20,185 posts)That's because some of that girth is the visceral brown fat and that's hard to lose.

(9,527 posts)Your body gets very used to dealing that that particular use of your muscles and you get strong in that fashion, but not in others. So doing regular cross training or training in a way that regularly mixes things up might be different.

(13,895 posts)I'm 68, on no meds and all my recent numbers are perfect.. Blood sugar, cholesterol, tri G's kidney function BP and weight are all good. My doctor is pissed he doesn't have me on any meds and only see him once a year... YMMV
The best health insurance is to insure your health and not follow a path that gets you sick.

(20,185 posts)Are you totally plant based, ie. vegan, or is your diet just mostly plants (80+ %)?
mitch96
(13,895 posts)Most days I eat grains,legumes,greens,fruits,nut/seeds etc. Maybe once a month I'll make some sardine toast or a piece of salmon... If I really go off the rails I'll have a slice of pizza while out with friends... It basically comes out to 2% of my meals are not whole food plant based.. I mostly cook at home cause it's hard to get "rabbit food" while outside. There is a all you can eat soup/salad bar near me that is outstanding but the soup is almost my total limit for salt... I also try to limit my oil usage.. Again, once per month.
I walk about 35 to 40 min per day and hit the gym in the afternoon, Yes I'm retired.. I do intervals on the recumbent bike and use weights and machines to round it up.. Health is my new job after retirement.. I want to go 100 mph and then turn off the switch.. No lingering around with amputated legs, G tube, pacemaker respirator and drooling on the pillow... Saw too much of that working in hospitals for over 40 years.. nope, not me..

P.S. I love my beer!!!! Beer is vegan, right??

(20,185 posts)I'm moving towards a cleaner diet, but I don't yet have your dedication. I do eat grass fed beef, wild caught fish and pastured eggs at home, and LOTS of veggies. I also find I just feel better when I don't eat wheat, or a lot of grains in general. Baby steps, baby steps.

(25,586 posts)Guinness is a good example; it uses fish bladders in the clarifying process.

(20,185 posts)I realize they probably do that because it's always been that way, but who was the first guy to think "Hey, we could use fish bladders for that!"

(13,895 posts)Guinness is/did remove the fish bladder from it's beer to make it Vegan..
http://nypost.com/2015/11/03/guinness-will-remove-fish-bladders-from-beer-to-go-totally-vegan/
I don't care if it's with or without.. The stuff tastes great and only 125 cal per glass... ?? diet beer?? Fish bladder is the least of it.. Most "commercial" beers have tons of chemicals in it..Bubble emulsifiers, clarifying agents etc.
Funny they use to give stout to pregnant women to "fortify" them.... Oh how times have changed.. Sorry I missed the St James Gate tour when I was over there years ago....

(35,438 posts)What mix of cardio and weight training do they refer to? It's always unclear with these studies. Yes, exercising alone won't help you lose weight. You need the right diet. However, exercising does train your body to burn excess fat which helps you to reduce weight.

(3,051 posts)I blame Charles Atlas, for those who remember him.
Anyway, I walk for about 90 minutes a day and lift heavy weights 4 days a week. Old school stuff: deadlifts, clean and press, bench, pullups, squats, etc.
I have never jogged except when I was in the Army. It hurt my knees.
People think I am a fit 70 year old. Sometimes late 60s.
And the way I have controlled fat? I do push-away-from-the-table-you-fat-bastards most of my life. I did this because I wore suits and they are expensive. So I had to keep my weight down.
I would also add that I've kept kosher most of my life, and, being a cheap bastard (and because kosher meat is often hard to find), I've eaten fish probably 1.5 meals a day, lots of eggs, and lots of dairy. Ironically, this has avoided basically all nitrated meat, except maybe lox.

(4 posts)Your bone density is probably off the charts good. That's what lifting will do. It's never too late for anyone to lift weights.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg does 20 pushups a day, and planks. May she remain healthy for at least four more years!
