It's always disappointing to learn that your heroes are deeply flawed.

It's one of the reasons we learn not to idolize people as we mature. For to be human is to be flawed. To look up to someone is one thing, but to see them as a hero is to see them as super/sub-human. I think most of us grow out of such tendencies some time in our early 20s or so. That being said it's such a human trait to idolize that I think we never totally outgrow the habit, let's face it we all still have our heroes.

So. What have been the greatest disappointments of your life to learn that someone you looked up to was flawed? They don't have to be unforgivable flaws, although those qualify too. Perhaps a beloved writer, actor, artist. Of course cutting much deeper are such realizations about family and loved ones, and here I would ask that people not go into too much detail if it's too painful.

who turned out to be sexual offenders. Disappointed me. I tend not to view athletes as much more than athletes these days, although their political stances are a curiosity factor when they choose to broadcast them.

One of the few "idols" I have left is Barack Obama. He made it through two terms without any scandals or policies that left me disillusioned.

My dad is a pretty good guy as well. Not as famous as Obama though, so you'll have to take my word for it.
