Confession: I have eaten more than my fair share of Subway meals over many years. It was located across the street from my former workplace so it was handy to grab lunch there and it is billed as a healthier "fast food" alternative.
The first major strike against them was having a perv as an international spokesperson (although in fairness to Subway, they didn't hire Jared knowing he is a pedophile and dropped him when word broke).
The second major strike against them were media reports that they used a chemical in their bread products to make it more pliable. It's the same chemical used in the manufacturing of yoga mats. It serves no other purpose. I also fault government regulatory agencies for allowing that crap to be used in food for human consumption. Public pressure convinced Subway to remove that damn chemical a few years ago (although by that point I had probably consumed enough of it that I should have been able to roll myself up like a yoga mat).

The latest mess is a Canadian broadcaster investigation into grilled chicken sandwiches from popular fast food chains. They had a bunch of them tested for content and the only one that came back at about 50% chicken content and 50% soy (filler) was the Subway chicken breast. Of course I've eat a metric ton of those things over the years as well. I'm not opposed to consuming soy but it's the principle. The use of it is strictly profit driven, reducing cost, and Subway should be more up front with consumers about the composition of their menu offerings.

Now, I'm not threatening a boycott. I won't go that far. But I will keep an eye on how Subway addresses this latest fiasco.

(17,355 posts)We do have Quiznos (been there quite a few times) and a Canadian operation called Mr. Sub (have had it several times as well).
But Subway is the most common sub chain, by far, even up here.

(17,355 posts)I prefer things mild, so the "blandness" doesn't bother me. But these other aforementioned things are starting to tick me off!
