I think that was sort of a symbolic pounce to indicate that he is, in fact, a predator who would be glad to hunt fish ... except for that water thing...

Domestic cats are descended from a desert species, Felis sylvestris lybica. Where would they ever find fish? For that matter, why does my cat Milo love ham? How would his ancestors have ever caught pigs, and then smoked the meat?
