13. Funny thing about carrots and goldfish

I'm not sure if the story is true - I remember reading about it somewhere, and it named the bar and bartender.

In the early 20th century some students from Harvard or Yale or some Ivy-League school went to New York and ended up at a popular bar where the bartender kept a bowl of goldfish from which he would pluck one and swallow live. The students brought back stories of the bartender, and that started the craze.

Except the bartender never actually did that. He would cut carrots into the shape of a goldfish tail, palm one, reach into the tank and pretend to grab a goldfish, put the carrot between his lips and move it up and down with his tongue before swallowing it.

So if true, a college craze was started by some Ivy-Leaguers fooled by a magic trick.

I can relate. Had one get in my house overnight and was drinking out of the cat's water fountain.

When I yelled "oh sh**" he dashed out. That was the last time I left the door to the screened porch open. It had chewed threw the screen to get in. The cats totally ignored him.
