I remember my first visit to the Canyon. Amazing and humbling. Has got to be on everyone's bucket list.

(38,421 posts)In 1973 I was driving across Nebraska on a summer eve to Illinois where I lived. All the trucks were leaving the highway, and there appeared to be a storm ahead....So brilliantly, I drove on and the storm hit, and it the middle of it, a lightening bolt hit the antenna, bounced over the hood and of course was grounded by the rubber tires...... For a very short moment..the radio blinked on and off, no interruption in the cars speed or anything else and on I went.. I was fine...
At the next exit, I got off and thought about it...stopped at a restaurant , and had a nice big piece of pie, and a large soda....and thought about it some more...So after a nice meal, back on the highway, and on I went and got to that nights destination....and pray tell, I remember it quite well.... and I got no picture of it since I was driving alone at 60 miles per hour in the middle of Nebraska...............all I have is a story, which most will not believe....oh well.........it happened.......................

(6,360 posts)One summer (mid 70s) I worked at a Girl Scout camp as a kitchen aid in upstate New York. Our dining hall was a huge, yellow and white striped circus tent. (The original burned down just before the summer, so this was it for the season.)
One afternoon, a strong storm rolled through while the other kitchen aid and I were cleaning up after lunch. A lightening bolt must have hit one of the poles of the tent and it traveled to the equipment in the kitchen and lit up the dish washing machine!!!
We got out of there pretty quickly.
(One of the camp counselors said she saw a bolt hit the ground and then travel down the walking path via a small river caused by the storm!)
