Oh HELLS yes...

Last edited Wed Mar 29, 2017, 10:50 PM - Edit history (1)

Some of you may remember that I'm an electrician in the Fort Lauderdale area.
Earlier this month I got into it with my boss about compensation. I wanted what I thought was a well deserved raise. He disagreed and wanted to wait.
Well, there's a ton of work down here so I decided to put in my two weeks notice and see what was out there. He didn't like that and told me to take my vacation pay and just go now, so I did. I took two weeks vacation and started my job search when I got back and oh, my God. Over the last twelve days I've submitted 20 or so resumes and got 14 replies back! After 14 interviews, I've gotten 5 offers of employment.

Today I finally said yes to one.
They more than doubled, DOUBLED my salary, 401k, company phone and truck! I am stoked!
I'm sitting here trying to type this while I'm bouncing off the walls. I haven't made this kind of scratch since Las Vegas was booming in the early 2000's. I was doing okay here, but now I'm actually going to be able to afford a nice house for myself (no more roommates), and maybe a boat to go with a new truck.
Maybe even find a steady girlfriend.

I hope this inspires others out there that are sick of their jobs and feel they can do better. Granted, I don't have a wife, or kids to feed; but sometimes you gotta jump into the deep end and start swimming. There are jobs out there, folks. You do not have to stay stuck somewhere that you feel you're under-appreciated. Put some feelers out. Submit some resumes.
Whaddya got to lose?

Just wanted to share some good news.

And thanks for all the rec's

I definitely know what it's like to get a HUGE jump in salary as I just did in December.

One piece of advice, don't be an idiot like me and go right out and get an expensive new truck. Definitely save some some of that awesome new income, maybe evaluate what you want to buy for a while. Wish I had done the same.

I too am in the construction industry in the South Florida area. I am on the design side but spend a lot of time on construction sites. We are about the same age too so maybe our paths will cross some day.

Life is too short to be stuck with a crappy job. Sometimes it is required but it is certainly sweet when you can move on to something better.

Congrats

In the meantime, it feels like if we could go just 60 days and not have something blow up, we be about a whole year ahead right now. So, we just keep pushing for now, knowing eventually this rock will break lol.

I told him there were no hard feelings on my end and that I missed us hanging out. He texted back and said he'd like that. We're still circling around each other a little bit; like a couple of tomcats. I think he has to work nights right now, so we'll have to coordinate some time for us to get together. Our working together often got in the way of our friendship, but we always worked past our arguments. We'll get past this too.

There is so much work available down here that all I really did was put my resume on a few job search websites and waited for replies. I applied to about 5 more listings today and I've already gotten 1 request to interview. There wasn't any ground pounding or even reducing my salary requests. In fact, I think I was low balling it. I asked for a $5/hr increase and nobody objected.

But the job I really wanted is the one I took. It was actually offered to me last Saturday but I held out before accepting and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I admit I was a little nervous when I quit, but I was still in good graces with a temp company I had worked with before and they're hurting for help as well so I knew I had a fallback. But I didn't even have to call them. I didn't file for unemployment either.

My good kharma worked for me, I guess.

For those with thin resumes damaged by the Great Recession, age, or illness, even the
well educated, the workplace is far less accommodating, even for jobs they would like
to do and are over-qualified for.

Employers have created a mean-spirited series of hoops to jump through with little focus
on anything other than robotic speed and perfect qualifications

But save some of that extra money in case it turns out there is some catch you don't know about. Double the salary usually means they need to attract people to join them for some reason. I would check glassdoor reviews of the company and see what their employees are saying.

I've been in a similar situation in the past where I left a shitty company for a much better job: better commute, better work, better pay, US citizen coworkers for the first time in my life, but it only lasted a short while due to problems retaining customers and a bad reputation from poor leadership. Layoffs started in 6 months. I was let go in 12 months. That was the reason for the higher salary. They needed temporary surge support after some people left.

Good luck! I hope it works out to be a great job for you.
