During the winter, when it was too cold to go out (in rural Indiana, for, by then, elderly bones) she got my grandfather to bring her some of those tubular cardboard concrete forms and a lot of that stretchy plastic dryer vent. Doxies want to tunnel, and they want to chase things through tunnels (Badger and mole hounds, after all). She'd lay the tubes out around the house and get hers to run through the tubes. It kept them occupied and distracted from their destructive tendencies, and wore them out when they were young. And since she was an unapologetic table scraps feeder (the dogs had high chairs at the table) it kept them from getting too fat.

I think agility would probably be a good your little guy if you don't want to build a course for him.

That said, he's adorable and that second picture looks like a senior picture after his first, kindergarten pic. He's growing up into a properly obnoxious teenager! Good job!

Dachshund? My best friend had one (sadly, Heidi's at the Bridge now). She was a sweet, friendly, very stubborn girl.

They are very stubborn. Must do things their own way.

He melts my heart.

The other two dogs love him but they are all 3 jealous, so we are always in the floor in a pack love-fest.

You can see the wheels turning behind those intelligent eyes! He might make a great obedience or agility dog. He is going to need plenty of stimulation.

Destruction is a rite of passage, I think. I am sure he is mostly entertaining and that is so important. We have a cat and a dog, both of whom we threaten regularly with banishment, but they keep us laughing.

I was teaching.

Worked on my other dogs.

Dachshunds are very stubborn, though. They do it their way and that's pretty much that.

A historically German (PA Dutch) city/region there is an Oktoberfest featuring lots of beer, food and a Dachshund Race. The entrants take this very seriously and train all year. The winner the year I went was a long-haired mini with the adorable name of Spartacus.

And that's why they make puppies so cute, so we can forgive the transgressions of their puppyhood. I had a puppy as a kid, have adopted older dogs ever since - until my Jack found me at five months. I'd forgotten how much work having a puppy could be, but it's been worth it since I intend to have him for a lot of years. He turned 11 three months ago, time flies! Two of my dogs have lived past 18, here's hoping that your adorable Mac is with you for at least that long, too...
