Change surprise

Preparing to run the dryer, I broke the paper wrapper on the roll of quarters I got at the bank. The coin box refused the first quarter (hey, it happens), so I set it aside and inserted others.

When the machine started I picked up the rejected coin and was quite surprised to realize that it’s not a quarter. Silver in color, it lacks the ridges around the edge and is lighter in weight. It has a farm and mountain scene on one side, along with “1 LEU”. On the other side, an official seal, 1966, and “Republica Socialista Romania”.

Coins from Canada and Mexico often show up in my pocket change, but this is a first. It’s kind of curious, though, that the bank didn’t notice.

(Some local establishments accept pesos. A local WalMart either accepts pesos or exchanges currency at their service desk.)

I used to see Canadian money all the time when I lived in WI, but that was years ago when most establishments accepted Canadian coins.

Really cool that you found a Romanian coin in your change. That's a keeper.
