The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHi, I'm new here
I have read discussions here from links that friends send me on FB. So I decided to register so I can join in.
I am 60. I love to read, sing, garden and I do some acting. I have two sons who are grown and on their own. One lives near me, he's in Philly and I am about 30 minutes away near Trenton NJ. My other son lives in FL, so I don't see him much unfortunately. I am a teacher, 6th grade right now.
I am a feminist, always have been. I am very liberal but I will always hold my nose and vote for a democrat over a third party candidate because I think that leads to the republican being elected. I am going to guess that many good people here won't agree with me.
BTW, my vote for Hillary was NOT done holding my nose. I think she was/is, as Obama said the best most qualified candidate ever to run for President.
So that is a bit about me. I guess I will get to know you all when I have been around longer.

(64,860 posts)By the way, "K&R" means "Kick and recommend."
A reply kicks the post to the top of the forum's first page (until another post gets kicked there by a reply), and enough recommends will get a post onto the "Greatest" page, which is arranged hierarchically according to recommend totals.
Five recs gets you to the "Greatest" page, so you are there now, and that means more people will read your post.

(12,132 posts)I'll wave to your son if I happen to see him.
The one time I didn't vote Dem in the last 30 years was for a local sheriff who was opposed to medical marijuana - not just recreational use, he was opposed to even medical use and I just don't think that's a very informed opinion for anyone, let alone a Democrat.
It was a protest vote as I knew he would win anyway and he did by a huge margin. I did support his wife for the state house of representatives.
but that's enough politics for the Lounge - how are your cats/dogs/fish/parrots/bunnies or?? ?? We in the lounge support pics of pets all day every day.

And, I hate Trump and think he's going to blow us all up, after he finishes ruining the economy. I wish to hell he'd resign in the face of growing calls for his impeachment.
I do art history in retiirement so if you want to if you would like to chat about art history...

You know, be against 90% because we aren't getting 100%. When I was growing up my Mom would tell me I was biting my nose to spite my face.

Third party candidates are fine, but I am opposed to voting booth activism... that is neither the time nor the place to voice one's displeasure with a particular candidate.

(80,522 posts)Thanks for weighing in and introducing yourself! I often wonder who the new arrivals are, what their stories are, and how they found their way here.
Gotta say - I'll be one of those here who agrees with you, with bells on and sirens blowing - about the utter folly of voting third party. All that does is hand the election to the GOP. You're sending a message alright. But it's guaranteed to be the one that gets you the response of "thanks, CHUMP!" from the bad guys you inadvertently helped across the finish line. That's how our system is, no matter who wants to argue how earnestly about it. That's just what IS. Like it or not, we're a two-party system. PERIOD. And yeah, there are many who don't like that. But it also means there are just as many who are eager to cut their noses off to spite their faces. And please somebody tell me, how well does THAT ever work out? Rebels, renegades, and other third-party outworlders just wind up being spoilers. Plain 'n' simple. Sorry, but that's the fact. As we've seen. All too painfully.
I, too, did NOT hold my nose to vote for Hillary. I couldn't wait to vote for Hillary!!! It was something I'd been waiting to do ever since I started learning about her - and just resonating with the woman like nobody's business. NEVER encountered any political person, male or female, with whom I connected at such a deeply profound level as I did with Hillary - and long before she ever became a formalized politician in her own right. She's the candidate I realized I was waiting all my life to vote for. She's my president, too. The Orange Shartmaster will NEVER be anything even close to that. And I don't vote for ANYBODY but "D's." NEVER an "R." 'Cause I don't believe in lurching our nation into Reverse.
Welcome! You sound like a sister to me. But probably nowhere near as annoying as I can be, here!
