The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsDoes anyone know of some mindless fun websites to keep my mind off of
politics for a while? Kind of like Buzzfeed or stupid things like that? I am kind of on overload and I just want to spend the weekend watching old movies and surfing the web, but don't really want to get into anything heavy. Of course I will check in here periodically, but I just need some light distraction.
Thanks in advance!

(24,728 posts)So on board with you.
Dug out my old copy of Good Night and Good Luck to watch while baking yesterday. Hoo boy. Prescient. I think it was released during the good ol' days of GW's term.
Heart of a Dog should be arriving from Netflix today.
I'll be tuning in here for ideas as I am as close to a breakdown as I can recall.

(63,221 posts)Not that I want you to feel bad, but they say that "pain shared is halved". So if you can just let other people know about it, it can unburden you somewhat.

(16,377 posts)I really enjoy documentaryheaven.com They have loads of topics and I can always find something interesting. Totally understand your situation. I've started watching True Crime murder shows TO RELAX; that's how bad the regular news has gotten. LOL.
Oh, AtlasObsura.com, for weird places and things. I subscribe to that for daily postings.
Good luck,

(63,221 posts)Thank you! I think I will watch one today. That is so funny that you are watching "True Crime" to relax. That just shows us how bad things have gotten!

(16,377 posts)But I think it's because the monotone voice of the narrator lulls me into relaxation even though it's about murder. I rarely follow the plot line. Yes, I know it's weird.

(17,622 posts)...the westerns I just discovered I liked! I am consciously trying to escape the 21st century and after over 60 yrs of avoiding them like the plague I am finding comfort on MeTv..FeTv and Tv land and have a little crush on Matt Dillon and Hoss.
Great.. all the ones I like are dead....
I get up at 330-4am so I start the day with Morning Joe..only if its juicy crap about the D..if not I turn to the Weather Channel)
Anyway at 7 am Pacific time I start with FeTv and an hour of Father Knows Best...then back to MeTv for an hour of Leave it to Beaver..then to Tv land for Gunsmoke (the hour long, color ones where Matts kind of an after thought...the b/w 30 min ones are back on MeTv in a cpl hours). This basically gets me thru to Hardball where I play slots and flip back and forth on the tv til Rachael is on.
By then I have cleaned house, fed the dogs, let them in and out 100 times... I'm ready for a drink and (a little pot).

(11,913 posts)If you're interested in spending some time helping citizen scientists with research (looking at pictures, identifying animals, plants, etc.) or transcribing handwritten notes (artists, musicians, politicians, civil war generals, etc.), you could go to Zooniverse.org.
I love going out and identifying and counting the animals on IR cameras - jaguars, elephants, giraffes, seals - they have a ton of research areas.

(34,136 posts)As in "the customer is not always right." It started for employees to post stories about stupid and funny things customers did. They've added various other categories - Not always working, for things workers do; not always romatic; not always related; not always learning; not always friendlyl and for a more upbeat and refreshing theme, Not Always Hopeless.

Another site I enjoy is CakeWrecks for some of the worst - and best - decorated cakes ever.
Recently I have become hooked on James Veitch's videos on YouTube starting with this one:
And this one:
He also has a series of short videos on the YouTube Mashable called Scamalot, some of which are repeats of parts of his TED talks.

(38,421 posts)here is one link I found...........
http://www.websudoku.com/
Once you get hooked on Sudoku.....it is mindless fun, and will keep busy for many hours. As you learn, you can move up to more difficult puzzles .........IT IS NOT MATH..........IT IS LOGIC...as Mr. Spock would say..
I got hooked a few years ago..many years ago...here was the test..and it was a good test for Stuart G..
I had a long plane trip from my Midwestern city, to Tokyo Japan. 13 to14 hours. playing Sudoku kept the mind occupied. I gradually got to know the tricks and difficulties..but it is all ....LOGIC..nothing else, and wasted a whole lot of that time. It still does that. Once you figure how to do it, then it is a real challenge..as you work up to the harder puzzels.....................ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh another ideas...
Go to some cheap store, your choice..get some, Jigsaw Puzzles ....you know, 500 pieces , a 1000 piece puzzle etc...start the puzzle..pick a picture you like, and watch it come together. Some will take a lot of time to put together, and they too are totally engrossing...No great skill as required, (Sudoku also required very little skill) but once you start one, you cannot stop. Nothing deep either..hell, it is just putting together jig saw puzzles ..I have a bunch of them hanging from my walls. They are kind of pretty too. Once you are through, you can get some goo at an art store that will make the puzzle permanent...........
GOOD LUCK TO ALL ON THESE IDEAS... . Stuart ....

(205,268 posts)It's called ANTENNA and they show all kinds of really old shows - many are sitcoms - some I never even saw first run. For example, tonight they're running The Jeffersons, Maude, Good Times, The Addams Family, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, Circus Boy(!) and my favorite: All in the Family. A couple of weeks ago I watched The Flying Nun and It's About Time. That last one I never saw before.

(38,421 posts)Good Luck ...be very careful if you use the site, some pieces get hidden underneath other pieces and a person could get very mad and walk away from putting it together...Be calm and sort out all the pieces...slowly and carefully..they are all there, it just takes time......good luck too all...............Stuart
