I have 78. Mostly relatives, old high school buddies and former shipmates. I'll have to double check but I don't think there's even a half dozen who don't fall into one of the 3 categories.

(4,429 posts)but for me I think it's a mistake. I think it would be better if I kept up with folks more (well, a few folks anyway!).
So, I'm thinking about it.........(sigh)

(4,429 posts)and the last three companies I worked for are either defunct or rebranded. One company had a line - not for a reference - but to Equifax. I couldn't get through to HR. It was awful.
I spent hours tracking folks down. It would have been a lot easier if I kept them in my social circle...........
I'm lucky that they are still out there and working (not retired) and we had a good relationship (friendly). But it reminded me that I need a facebook that's newsy about me and just sort of 'keeps in touch.'

(531 posts)I am political on my board. What I say would offend them. I do not care to hear their opinion. The only person I have unfriended was a family member.

(13,582 posts)request as long as I know who it is. I only ask to be friends if it's someone I actually knew pretty well or did stuff with.
It pretty much takes someone getting nailed for a sex crime (which has happened twice) for me to boot them. Even the most obnoxious right-winger, I let stay. Better to keep an eye on what they throw up on the feed than cut them loose. It can be informative.

(17,303 posts)I have "unfollowed" more than half of them. Some pollute my "news feed" with endless memes and jokes and nutty videos, so I don't want to see that. Others post multiple "selfies" every day. Don't need to see that either.
The remainder occasionally post meaningful life updates that are truly of interest to me, or they link to meaningful articles (like you often find as the source of a thread here at the DU) or the odd video that genuinely amuses me. Everything in moderation, right?

I post this once a year: Most of you reading this would not exist if I had not married a Cuban refugee in 1963.
(Just a warning not to post any right-wing bullshit where I can read it.)

(426 posts)....my ex SIL. We lost contact after her brother, my son's father, died, back in 1979. Then we got back in touch, until I read her hateful posts about Obama. Really stupid, vile stuff. She even listed Rush as a "fav". NO! Oh hell NO!
I blocked her and haven't been tempted to communicate anymore. Luckily, she lives in TN and I'm in CA. Mostly now I just use FB to keep up on what my nieces/nephews/family are doing.
Really frustrating to try to find old boyfriends...the ones who are still living. Especially when several with the same name pops up. How can I lurk on your FB page when I don't know which one you are!?

FB has been great for our resistance. We plan everything on FB. For instance, I can't decide on Thursday whether to go to Precinct Chair training or an event with our City Council member. Don't even get me started on Saturday morning. There are about 5 local Democratic Party functions that are pulling me in many different directions. I love the event thing, it is like a calendar.

2 from Jr high, many from high school and the most of the rest are bands I follow and people I know from shows I go to. Not many from work as that is just dangerous. There's a few family but they are mostly all of an Accord with my politics so that's no problem. My brother isn't but he a doperson and I pick on him fir his ridiculous views that I firmly believe he champions just to be
funny.

(31,384 posts)Some are family, some are high school friends. Others are friends acquired through the years living from coast to coast
and traveling. Some are DU'ers who are also on fb.
I have defriended a bunch of people who expressed support of Trump either before or after the election. Some Trump supporting
family are still "friends" but I don't follow them.
I mostly stay on fb because it's easier to keep up with family and real friends that way. I enjoy hearing about their travels
and their lives and their kids.
I do some politics--commenting on posts--on fb, but mostly I avoid it.
I'm only on it because it is the only way to see some relative's photos.
