A Phryne Fisher murder mystery. A loner had a young one as a pet (of course this was in Australia), and after Phryne, the heroine, saw how he would run to get his treat (a potato), she was able to get away from a bad guy by tossing a potato right behind him. The wombat just ran right over the villain to his goodie and they were able to disarm him.
