On Friday, 19 September 2014, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) fired its staff union President, Moncef Kateb. This was done in advance of WIPO's annual governing body meeting, where Kateb was expected to criticize the controversial management style and behaviour of Director General, Francis Gurry. Kateb was also in the process of defending two former colleagues in front of the WIPO appeals board. Kateb had previously blown the whistle on the Director General when sophisticated IT equipment had been shipped to North Korea. The Director General is also accused of having improperly influenced a procurement process and of having used the Geneva police to obtain the DNA of WIPO staff so as to identify the author of a letter against him. For these, the Director General is the subject of a preliminary investigation. Please write to Director General Gurry to call for Mr. Kateb's reinstatement. As an agency of the United Nations, WIPO should lead by example in respecting the ILO Convention on Freedom of Association and the UN Convention on Civil and Political Rights.
