Negative space carving.

Made this cross from black birch, a tree taken down on our property about ten years ago it is approximately 14" tall I like the effect of the cutout I will be experimenting with more subjects.

The tree had to come down while I was building my shop I milled it into boards and it has become a few tables and benches I have a few slabs left. It has a beautiful color and grain.

I think you did a great job with the wood you salvaged. Wood is a warm and life affirming material that gives artwork a very special value. I like that you did negative space carving on it. It gives the impression of deep religious belief mixed with living material, as if the figure of Jesus on the cross was always there in the heart of the tree. Very nice!

I myself am not really religious I was brought up Catholic but it never stuck. I do a fair amount of work for churches making furniture and reproduction pieces. I enjoy looking at the architecture of a church and designing furniture to match.
